TOEIC 那些「看起來太簡單」的介系詞陷阱

你正在 TOEIC Part 5 一路順順地寫，平均一題二十秒、毫無壓力。然後你撞到這題：

"Please submit your report _____ Friday."

你停了一下。好像四個都通？你選了「until」因為聽起來最合理，繼續往下寫，然後悄悄丟掉了一分本來不該丟的分。TOEIC 介系詞陷阱的可怕之處不是題目很難，而是題目「看起來」太簡單，於是你停止仔細讀題。

中文母語者特別容易在這裡踩坑，因為很多商用英文搭配跟中文直譯出來的版本剛好相反。「在 3 點開會」直譯就想用 in，但英文要 at；「30 天內付款」直譯成 in 30 days，但英文要 within；「支票開給供應商」直譯想成 for 或 give，英文卻是 payable to。

• The meeting starts at 9:30 sharp.（時鐘上的時間永遠搭 at。）
• The training session is scheduled for next Tuesday.（"For" 用在「排定的活動」。）

Email 與文件用語

• Please see the figures in the attached spreadsheet.（在檔案裡面。）
• That item is on the agenda for tomorrow.（列在議程這個「表面」上。）
• I'll respond at your earliest convenience.（固定片語，永遠是 at。）
• The contract is under review.（狀態片語。）
• Details are in section 3 of the proposal.

辦公室地點

• Please check in at the front desk.（具體某個點。）
• The all-hands is in the main conference room.（封閉空間。）
• HR is on the third floor.（樓層永遠用 on。）
• The printer is in the corner of the break room.

發票與付款

• Please remit payment within 14 days of receipt.
• Make the cheque payable to Greenfield Solutions Ltd.
• The amount will be charged to your corporate account.
• A late fee applies after 30 days.

常見錯誤

• ❌ "Please reply until Friday." → ✅ "Please reply by Friday." · Until 是「一路持續到那個時間點」，by 才是「在那個截止點之前」── 商用情境幾乎永遠要的是後者。
• ❌ "The meeting is in 3 p.m." → ✅ "The meeting is at 3 p.m." · 時鐘上的具體時間永遠用 at，不會用 in。
• ❌ "Make the cheque payable for the supplier." → ✅ "Make the cheque payable to the supplier." · "Payable to" 是商用世界的固定片語。
• ❌ "The report is in the agenda." → ✅ "The report is on the agenda." · 議程被當作「表面上的清單」，所以用 on。
• ❌ "Please respond on your earliest convenience." → ✅ "Please respond at your earliest convenience." · 商用固定片語；只有 at 這個版本存在。
• ❌ "Our office is in the third floor." → ✅ "Our office is on the third floor." · 英文裡「樓層」永遠用 on，雖然辦公室本身是 in 這棟樓。
• ❌ "Payment is due in 30 days from now." → ✅ "Payment is due within 30 days." · Within 才正確框出「窗口」；in 30 days 意思是「剛好第 30 天那天」。

考試陷阱

TOEIC 介系詞陷阱有三層。第一層：四個選項都是常見又合理的介系詞，無法靠直覺刪掉任何一個。第二層：題幹通常很短，只有一句話，你拿不到太多上下文線索。第三層：考試會重複使用固定的商用片語（payable to、at your earliest convenience、on the agenda、within 30 days），這些你就是必須整組記下來。修法不是去刷上千題練習題期待自己有一天會通靈，而是把這些片語以 chunk 為單位記住，就像背 "good at" 或 "afraid of" 一樣 ── 一個單位、不能拆。重要提醒：不要 試圖背實際的 TOEIC 試題本身。除了違規之外，真實題目會退役、會更新，唯一會延續下去的是「模式」。學模式，永遠不要去背特定句子。

解答

1. by ── 提交截止時間永遠用 by，意思是「不晚於那個時間」。
2. on ── 商用英文裡樓層永遠搭 on，不會是 in。
3. within ── "Within 30 days" 才正確框出「窗口」；in 30 days 會被解讀成「剛好第 30 天」，這不是發票要表達的意思。
4. to ── "Payable to" 是商用固定片語，其他介系詞在這裡都不通。
5. at / on ── 時鐘時間搭 at、星期幾搭 on ── 一個短句裡同時出現兩個介系詞，是非常經典的 TOEIC 題型。

一句總結

TOEIC 介系詞題獎勵的是「模式辨識」，不是「死背個別句子」。把上面這張表練到變成肌肉記憶，那些「看起來太簡單」的題目就真的會變簡單。
