感覺很怪，對吧？而奇怪的地方在於，你並沒有說錯任何東西。「I'm a software engineer」是完全正確的英文，文法毫無瑕疵。問題不在文法，問題在於答案的形狀。你遞給對方一個事實，卻沒給他任何可以抓住的東西。對「What do you do?」的好答案不只是一個標籤——它是一扇微微敞開的門。
為什麼會覺得尷尬
課堂上沒人會告訴你的真相是：職稱是條死胡同。當你說「I'm an accountant」然後就停下，你等於沒給對方任何可以追問的東西。他要嘛得很費力地撐住對話（「Oh, do you... like numbers?」），要嘛禮貌地讓它死掉。多數人會選擇讓它死掉。
母語人士通常不會只用職稱回答。他們會用職稱＋一點脈絡：現在正在忙什麼、喜歡哪個部分、為誰做這件事，或一個有人味的小細節。那多出來的一塊才是真正在撐場面的。它告訴聽者：「這裡有條線，你可以拉拉看。」對話基本上就是兩個人輪流遞線給對方拉。光禿禿的職稱在線還沒開始之前就把它剪斷了。

常見陷阱
- 一個詞的職稱講完就停。「I'm a teacher.」句點。你技術上是回答了，但也順手把門甩上。現在所有的力氣都得對方來出。
- 工作職責大傾倒。矯枉過正。你把履歷上每一條職責都唸出來。「I manage a team of six, oversee quarterly reporting, coordinate with vendors, and...」聽者的眼神早就放空了。閒聊不是季度績效檢討。
- 道歉式回答。「Oh, it's nothing interesting, just an office job.」現在你逼得對方要來安慰你，這對他來說是很尷尬的勞動。別讓人來安撫你對自己人生的看法。

- 只會反彈球。對方一問完就立刻丟回去，自己卻不提供任何資訊：「What do you do?」感覺很閃躲，好像你在迴避。
更好的說法

- "I work in marketing — right now I'm mostly doing email campaigns, which is way more fun than it sounds."
- "I'm a nurse. I just moved to the night shift, so I'm currently a little bit nocturnal."
- "I'm studying architecture. We're designing a public library this semester, so I've basically been living in the studio."
- "I do customer support for a travel app. The wild stories people tell us could fill a book."
- "I'm an accountant, but the part I actually enjoy is helping small businesses figure out where their money's going."
- "I teach middle school science. It's chaos, but the good kind."
注意這個模式：先簡短，再給一個細節。你不是在總結你的職業生涯，你是在丟出一條線。
