The Problem

談圖表,是簡報者最容易搬出最學術版英文的場景之一。「Experienced a significant increase.」「Demonstrated a downward trend.」「There has been a notable fluctuation.」這些句子文法都對,但聽起來慢、又重。它們也會讓你跟自己的資料拉開距離。當你說「the line experienced an increase」,聽起來像在唸研究論文;當你說「it jumped」,聽起來像個真的看得懂自己在秀什麼的人。

另一個問題是:學習者常常每張圖都用同一套描述方式——介紹軸線、唸出圖例、從左到右把數字唸一遍。英文母語簡報者的做法不同:他們只會指出一兩個真正重要的點,其他全部跳過。圖表是證據,講者負責講故事。

Better Phrases

往上

  • "It jumped." / "It shot up." — 突然、銳利的上升。
  • "It crept up slowly." / "It's been creeping up." — 慢,但穩定。
  • "It doubled." / "It almost tripled." — 「翻倍」這類動詞比百分比更有力。
  • "It's been climbing for six months." — 帶出時間區段的上升。

往下

  • "It dropped." / "It fell off a cliff." — 急速下滑(懸崖那個版本很戲劇化,保留給真的劇變時用)。
  • "It's been slipping." / "It's been sliding." — 緩慢、持續的下滑。
  • "It's down by about a third." — 大約值,口語感很強。
  • "It hasn't recovered." — 用來解釋「掉下去之後就沒回來」的狀況。

持平/上下震盪

  • "It's basically flat." — 口語,比「stable」更誠實。
  • "It's hovering around 40." — 卡在某個數字附近。
  • "It's been bouncing around all year." — 起伏不定,看不出規律。
  • "It hasn't moved much, honestly." — 更口語化一點的版本。

比較

  • "Twice as many." / "Half as much." — 能用的時候比百分比乾淨。
  • "Almost the same — but not quite, and that 'not quite' is the interesting part."
  • "Way more than I expected." — 多了一點人味反應。
  • "Roughly the same as last year." — 約略值,常常比精確值更誠實。

Don't Say This / Say This

  • Don't say: "The blue line experienced a significant increase over the past quarter."

  • Say: "Look at the blue line — it more than doubled last quarter."

  • (具體的動詞、具體的數字,沒有 "experienced an increase" 那種空話。)

  • Don't say: "Sales have demonstrated a downward trend."

  • Say: "Sales have been slipping for three months in a row."

Common Mistake

學習者常常把數字唸到小數點後好幾位。「Revenue increased by 14.7 percent.」「User retention is at 62.3 percent.」英文母語簡報者在口語中會大幅度四捨五入——「about 15 percent」、「around two-thirds」、「roughly half」。這不是隨便,而是大腦處理起來比較快。精確數字屬於投影片,整數版本屬於你的嘴巴。如果某個確切數字真的重要,那就指著投影片上的它——不要硬把「14.7 percent」漂亮地唸出口。

還有一個相關的陷阱:「increase」這個動詞本身。它寫在文章裡沒問題,但講出來就會變得很扁。"jumped"、"climbed"、"doubled"、"shot up" 這些動詞承載的能量,是「increased」給不了的。「increase」留給書面報告——口語上挑一個會做事的動詞。

Practice

  1. 找一份你讀過的報告裡的任一張圖表。用這篇文章列出來的動詞(jumped、slipped、doubled 等等),用三句話描述它。
  2. 找一張你以前簡報過的圖表。重寫你當時的描述,但不能用 "increase"、"decrease"、"trend" 這三個字。
  3. 挑一個你熟悉的數字(你的團隊營收、你國家的人口、隨便)。用三種方式把它在口語上四捨五入:到最近的百、到最近的千、到最近的數量級。
  4. 用 "twice as"、"half as much"、"way more than" 比較兩個數字,不要用任何百分比。
  5. 錄自己用 20 秒描述一張圖表,再重錄一次只用 10 秒。注意你直覺會砍掉哪些字。
