"I arrived in time for the movie, in the end."
I arrived on time for the movie, in the end."。

In the end = 最後、終究。
In time = 來得及,還有一點 margin。
On purpose = 故意地。
- At first = 一開始。
- In the morning / afternoon / evening,但 at night。

- ❌ "I arrived in time for class."(你想說「剛好在上課時間到」)→ ✅ "I arrived on time for class." · On time 是「準時」;in time 是「來得及,還有 margin」。
- ❌ "At the end, we decided to stay home." → ✅ "In the end, we decided to stay home." · In the end 是「最後/終究」;at the end 是指時間或空間上的具體位置。
- ❌ "I came by foot." → ✅ "I came on foot."
- ❌ "I broke it in accident." → ✅ "I broke it by accident."
- ❌ "I usually study in night." → ✅ "I usually study at night."
- ❌ "On the long run, exercise helps your mood." → ✅ "In the long run, exercise helps your mood." · "In the long run" 是固定片語;"on the long run" 在英文裡根本不存在。
- ❌ "At last week I saw him." → ✅ "Last week I saw him."
- The meeting starts at 9. Please be there _____ time.
- I didn't mean to send that text. It was completely _____ accident.
- I prefer to exercise _____ the morning before work.
- _____ the end, we never solved the mystery, but we had fun trying.
- He cycles to the office, but in winter he goes _____ bus.
解答
- on ── "On time" 是「剛好在排定的那一刻」,「please be there」要表達的就是這個。
- by ── 無意間的動作永遠是 "by accident",不會是 in accident 或 on accident。
- in ── "In the morning / afternoon / evening" 是這三個時段的固定搭配。
- In ── "In the end" 是「最後/終究」,當成最終結果用 ── 跟 "at the end"(指某個位置)不一樣。
- by ── 交通方式(除了走路)永遠是 by + 不加冠詞:by bus、by car、by plane。
|---|---|---|
| at the end(表結果時) | in the end | 最後、終究 |
| in time(表準時時) | on time | 剛好在排定時間 |
| in accident | by accident | 不小心 |
| by foot | on foot | 走路 |
| in night | at night | 在夜間 |
| on the long run | in the long run | 長期下來 |
| at the morning | in the morning | 在早上 |
