別再搞混 charge、fee、deposit、refund、receipt 與 balance
付款的詞彙能幫你在商店、餐廳、辦公室、應用程式、租賃、課程和服務預約中，把錢的事情說清楚。許多問題之所以發生，就是因為某個小小的金錢用字不夠明確。charge 可能是主要的費用；fee 可能是額外的費用；deposit 可能是先付、之後再退還的錢；refund 則可能在你取消、退貨或反映問題之後退回來。
與其說「The money is wrong.」，你可以說「I paid a deposit, but the final balance still includes a cleaning fee.」這句話給了對方一條清楚的解決路徑。好的付款英文，會把金額、原因、時間點和憑證一一說清楚。
關鍵區別
charge（費用、收費）是你被要求支付，或出現在卡片或帳戶上的一筆金額。它可以是主要的價格，也可以是帳單上的某一個特定項目。
fee（費用、規費）通常是針對某項服務、規定或特殊情況收取的額外金額。常見的例子有外送費、滯納金、服務費、申請費、取消費和手續費。
deposit（訂金、押金）是在全額付款之前先付的錢。它可能用來保留預約、啟動訂單，或是保障所有者免於損失。有些訂金可以退還，有些則不行。

詢問收費與規費
當你詢問某筆款項時，要避免聽起來像在指控對方。先從一個清楚的問句開始：
「Could you explain this charge?」
「What is this fee for?」
「Is this a one-time charge or a monthly charge?」
「Does the price include taxes and fees?」
「Are there any additional fees I should know about?」
如果金額出乎意料，可以用 I was expecting 或 I thought：
「I was expecting the total to be forty dollars.」

談訂金
訂金的用語在租賃、預約、客製化訂單、活動和服務上都很重要。要問兩個問題：訂金是否可以退還，以及它會如何被使用。
「Is the deposit refundable?」
「What is the cancellation deadline for getting the deposit back?」
「Will the deposit go toward the final balance?」
「How long does it take to return the security deposit?」
「Could I get a receipt for the deposit?」
當訂金是用來保留某個東西時，用 hold：「The deposit holds the room until Friday.」當訂金會減少你之後要付的金額時，用 apply：「We will apply the deposit to your final balance.」
談收據與憑證
收據能保障雙方。它記錄了你買了什麼、何時付款、付了多少，有時還會記錄你是怎麼付的。如果你之後需要協助，收據編號、訂單編號或交易編號能讓溝通更快速。
「I have the receipt with me.」
「The receipt number is at the bottom.」
「Could you resend the receipt?」

不要把每一張付款紀錄都叫成 bill。bill 是要你付款；receipt 則是證明你已經付過了。
學習者常犯的錯誤
當你的意思是公司退回了錢時，不要說「I paid the fee back」。要說「They refunded the fee」或「I received a refund」。
不要混淆 price 和 fee。price 是主要的費用；fee 通常是額外的費用。
不要說「the receipt is a paper of money」。要說「The receipt is proof of payment」。
不要說「my card was payed」。要說「My card was charged」或「The payment went through」。
不要說「How much is the rest money?」要說「What is the remaining balance?」
不要以為 deposit 代表會無條件退錢。有些訂金可以退還，但有些是不可退還的。
實用範例段落
