Rhode Island 行程該加 Johnson & Wales、Providence College、URI 或 Bryant 嗎？

Brown University 與 Rhode Island School of Design 是多數國際家庭前往 Providence 的主因，但它們不是 Rhode Island 校園地圖的全部。市內的 Johnson & Wales University 在 Downcity 以 hospitality、culinary、business 與 design 支撐校園存在；Providence College 位在 Smith Hill，具 Catholic Dominican liberal-arts 身分；Rhode Island College 則在 Mount Pleasant 承擔大量公立本科教學。市外，University of Rhode Island 是 Kingston 的州立旗艦；Roger Williams University 位在 Bristol 的 Mount Hope Bay 海岸；Bryant University 則在 Smithfield 的郊區 business-focused campus。

對以 Brown / RISD 為主的國際家庭來說，問題通常不是「要不要全部看」，而是「哪一所符合申請者的真實興趣，值得用半天或一天延伸？」本文逐一說明各校適合什麼申請者，以及如何在不重做行程的情況下合理加入。

Johnson & Wales University (JWU)

Johnson & Wales University 是私立大學，以 hospitality management、culinary arts、business 與 design programs 在全美具知名度。Providence campus 除了 Downcity academic core，也有 downtown 東南方的 Harborside Campus，歷史上承載 culinary、hospitality 與 food-science 設施。近年 program locations 曾調整，出發前務必在 JWU 官網確認。

JWU 的特色包括：

• College of Hospitality Management：hospitality、hotel、tourism、sports management 與 event-management programs，是美國最知名的 hospitality 領域之一。
• College of Food Innovation & Technology：culinary arts、baking and pastry、culinary nutrition 與 food-and-beverage management，延續 JWU 的創校身分。
• College of Business：accounting、finance、marketing、business administration 與相關課程。
• College of Engineering & Design：graphic design、illustration、architectural studies、industrial design、fashion merchandising 等。
• College of Health & Wellness：nursing、public health、dietetics 與 health-science programs。

參訪家庭應注意：

• 三年制 bachelor's degree options。 JWU 提供結構化三年完成學士的選項，主打更早就業、降低總成本；資格請查官網。
• Industry internships 是核心。 JWU 的 experiential-learning model 很重視產業實習與 placement；參訪時應問在校生實習如何嵌入學年。
• First-generation 與 international student populations 具規模。 JWU 有相當比例的一代大學生與國際學生，支援系統也反映這點。

若申請者真心關注 hospitality、culinary、hotel、tourism、sports management 或 event management，JWU 是本指南中最有理由加入的學校。若學生想要 pre-professional business 且重視 experiential learning，也值得比較；若想要理論或研究導向 business，則可能更適合 Bentley、Babson、Bryant 或 Brown economics。對不想承擔 RISD full BFA studio intensity、但對 design 好奇的學生，JWU Engineering & Design 也可能是替代選項。

Providence College

Providence College (PC) 是位在 Smith Hill / Elmhurst 的 Catholic Dominican liberal-arts college，成立於 1917 年，本科約 4,500 人。PC 是有明確宗教身分的學校：Catholic and Dominican mission 真正融入學術生活與學生節奏。學校 motto 為 "Veritas" (Truth)，官方敘述也強調此身分深植學生經驗。

PC 最具辨識度的學術特色是 Development of Western Civilization Program，校內稱 "Civ"：四學期必修核心課，透過 seminar 與 lecture 系列涵蓋西方思想、宗教、藝術與歷史傳統。Civ 在美國高等教育中不尋常，因為它真的要求所有本科生修讀，且佔前兩年相當份量。

其他特色包括：

• Liberal arts focus，涵蓋 humanities、social sciences、sciences、education，也有 School of Business。
• Honors Program，適合想要更密集學術路徑的學生。
• Strong undergraduate teaching identity，相較大型研究型大學班級較小，強調師生互動。

PC 最清楚適合希望 Catholic Dominican mission 成為日常學術節奏一部分的學生。非天主教學生若想要嚴肅 Western intellectual-tradition liberal arts core 與住宿社群，也可能適合；PC 也招收相當多非天主教學生。若學生想要 Brown / Georgetown / SFS 那種 federal-city 或 international-affairs orientation，PC 不是同類型學校。若想要 Division I basketball culture，PC 則比 Brown 或 RISD 更能提供。

University of Rhode Island (URI)

University of Rhode Island 是 Rhode Island 州立旗艦研究型大學，位在 Kingston，距 Providence 以南約 30 英里，開車約 35-45 分鐘，RIPTA 公車會更久。URI 比 Providence 市內學校大得多，本科約 14,000-15,000 人，尺度、地理與學術組合都不同。

URI 的特色包括：

• College of Pharmacy：URI 代表性 program 之一，pre-professional path 很強。
• Graduate School of Oceanography：具國際知名度；oceanography 工作以 Narragansett 的 Bay Campus 為核心。
• College of Engineering：civil、mechanical、electrical、computer、biomedical、chemical 與 ocean engineering。
• College of Business：accounting、finance、supply chain、marketing 與 business analytics。
• College of the Environment and Life Sciences：agriculture、fisheries、environmental science、marine biology 等。

URI 的公立旗艦尺度意味著 introductory courses 可能比 Brown 或 PC 大，校園生活也更接近傳統 public flagship，有住宿、Greek life 與 athletics。Kingston 主校區距 Bay Campus 與 Narragansett coast 約 15 分鐘；marine biology、oceanography 與 environmental science 學生能直接接觸海灣。州內補助主要服務 Rhode Island residents；國際學生通常要面對 out-of-state cost，請確認最新 aid policy。

若申請者認真考慮 pharmacy、oceanography、marine biology、ocean engineering、fisheries 或 environmental science，URI 是最有力的延伸。若想體驗 public-flagship scale，也值得安排一整天。

Roger Williams University (RWU)

Roger Williams University 是 Bristol 的私立大學，位在 East Bay，距 Providence 以南約 30 分鐘車程。校園真的臨水，Mount Hope Bay 景觀與校內 Sailing Center 是日常特色。學校名稱來自 Providence 與 Rhode Island 宗教自由傳統的創建者 Roger Williams，這段背景在本系列 Providence history article 中討論。

RWU 特色包括：

• School of Architecture, Art and Historic Preservation，包含五年制 Bachelor of Architecture (BArch)，是 New England 具代表性的本科建築 program 之一。
• Marine biology and marine and environmental sciences，沿海位置提供直接 Bay access。
• School of Business：accounting、finance、management、marketing 等。
• School of Justice Studies：criminal justice、legal studies 等，RWU School of Law 也在 Bristol。
• Performing Arts：theatre、music、dance 等。

RWU 本科約 4,000 人，住宿型小校感與 URI 的公立旗艦尺度不同。Bristol 本身是小型海岸城鎮，可步行、有港口，離 Newport 不遠。若申請者真心對 architecture 或 marine biology 感興趣，又想看一座 coastal small college，RWU 很值得加入。請在 RWU Visit 確認參訪項目；可搭配 Bristol harbor walk。

Bryant University

Bryant University 是 Smithfield 的 business-focused 私立大學，距 Providence 西北約 20 分鐘車程。它是郊區住宿型校園，與市內 Providence 學校很不一樣。

Bryant 特色包括：

• College of Business：accounting、finance、marketing、management、supply chain、business analytics 與 information systems 是核心。
• College of Arts and Sciences：humanities、social sciences、sciences 與多個 interdisciplinary majors。
• School of Health and Behavioral Sciences：health sciences、nursing（請確認目前 program）與 behavioral fields。
• Major / minor combinations：強調 business major 加 non-business minor，或反向組合。

本科約 3,500 人，校園住宅型、郊區且 sports-active。若申請者想要 undergraduate business 或 business analytics，又偏好比大型研究型大學更小、更 residential 的環境，Bryant 是合理選項。若學生正在比較 Bentley、Babson 或其他區域 business-focused private universities，也應把 Bryant 放進清單。

Rhode Island College 與 CCRI

• Rhode Island College (RIC) 位於 Mount Pleasant，距 downtown Providence 西北約 10 分鐘，是公立區域大學，本科約 5,500 人。RIC 傳統強項是 education、social work、nursing 與相關專業。它與 URI 不同：較小、研究強度較低，更重本科教學與區域服務。若家庭考慮 teacher preparation、social work 或 nursing，且有 Rhode Island resident in-state aid 需求，RIC 是自然選項。
• Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) 是州內公立 community college，有多個校區，包括 Warwick 的 Knight Campus。CCRI 是 transfer pathway 與 ESL 的重要據點，適合考慮先讀兩年、轉學或結構化 ESL 的家庭認識。

RIC 與 CCRI 通常不會放進 Brown / RISD 為主的國際家庭校園參訪，但完整理解 Rhode Island higher education 時不能忽略。

如何把這些學校加入 Brown / RISD 行程

誠實說，以 Brown / RISD 為主的行程本身已經是紮實兩日校園步行。再加第三、第四所學校，很容易稀釋注意力。可行模式是：

• 加一所延伸學校，不要加三所。 選最符合申請者興趣的一所，其餘略過。
• JWU 參訪 可安排 Providence 半天，接在 Brown 或 RISD 上午後。Downcity campus 距 College Hill 約 10 分鐘車程；Harborside campus 是另一個停留點。
• PC 參訪 可安排半天上午，再接 Brown / RISD 下午，或放在新的一天上午。PC 距 College Hill 約 10 分鐘車程，但節奏與身分很不同，請正式參訪。
• URI 參訪 應安排一整天。往 Kingston、可選 Bay Campus、校園導覽與返回，會吃掉整天。
• RWU 參訪 可半天或一天。Bristol 與 Newport 同在 East Bay，可與 Newport / Boston / New Haven extension article 的 Newport 日搭配。
• Bryant 參訪 可半天。Smithfield campus 距 Providence 約 20 分鐘車程。

實務上的意思

• Brown 與 RISD 不是 Rhode Island 校園地圖的全部。 JWU、PC、URI、RWU、Bryant、RIC 與 CCRI 補足 College Hill 雙校之外的選項。
• 選一所延伸學校，不要選好幾所。 Brown / RISD 為主的行程已經很扎實；一所選得好的延伸會加分，三所只會分散注意力。
• 把學校對準申請者興趣。 Hospitality / culinary / business 對 JWU；Catholic Dominican liberal arts 對 PC；public-flagship scale、pharmacy、oceanography、marine biology 對 URI；architecture、marine biology、coastal small-college 對 RWU；business and analytics、suburban residential 對 Bryant。
• 規劃前確認每所學校官方 visit programs。 參訪規則會更新。
• 聰明使用地理。 JWU、PC 與市內學校可較容易搭配 Brown / RISD。URI in Kingston 是 full-day extension。RWU in Bristol 可搭 Newport。Bryant in Smithfield 是 half-day。
