布料與材質詞彙能幫你說明某樣東西的觸感、外觀、耐用度，以及該如何保養。在挑選衣服、閱讀商品標籤、選購寢具、打包行李，或說明某件物品為何穿起來舒服或不舒服時，這些詞彙都很實用。

許多學習者認識 cotton、wool、leather 這類單字，卻不一定清楚如何把它們放進句子裡。關鍵在於把材質與一個實際目的連結起來：保暖、透氣、柔軟、彈性、耐用度、正式程度或保養方式。

為什麼這項技能重要

材質會影響日常的決定。一件 cotton T 恤在炎熱天氣裡可能很舒服。一件 wool 大衣可能很保暖，卻會刺癢。一件 silk 女衫看起來可能很優雅，卻需要小心清洗。一件 polyester 襯衫可能乾得很快，卻感覺比較不透氣。

當你能描述材質，就能問出更好的問題：「Is this machine-washable?」「Does it stretch?」「Is it real leather or faux leather?」這些問題能幫你避免買到在店裡好看、實際生活中卻不實用的衣服。

Material 還是 fabric？

「Material」是一個概括的詞，可以指某樣東西的構成材料：cotton、wood、metal、plastic、glass、leather 或 wool。

「Fabric」通常指用於衣物、窗簾、寢具、包包等物品的布料。Cotton、linen、denim、velvet 與 fleece 都是 fabric。

你可以說「What material is this jacket made of?」或「What fabric is this dress?」這兩句在服飾店裡都很自然。若是家具或工具，通常用「material」比較好：「What material is the table made of?」

以下是常見的材質詞彙與好用的描述用語：

cotton：柔軟、透氣，常用於 T 恤與襯衫

「Waterproof」和「water-resistant」並不一樣。一件 waterproof 的雨衣應能在大雨中讓你保持乾爽。一件 water-resistant 的外套也許能在小雨中保護你，但最終還是會濕。

「Breathable」和「lightweight」相關，但有所不同。Lightweight 指的是不重。Breathable 指的是空氣能在布料間流動，所以你比較不會感到悶熱或流汗。一件塑膠雨衣可能很 lightweight，卻不 breathable。

在談到價格、道德與保養時，「real leather」和「faux leather」就有差別。Faux leather 看起來可能相似，但觸感可能不同，老化的方式也不同。

「Delicate」指容易損壞、需要小心保養。Silk、lace 和某些薄針織品都很 delicate。「Durable」指強韌而耐久。Denim、canvas 與 leather 通常都很 durable。

描述舒適度與保養

當你描述布料時，別只停在材質名稱。要加上它對使用者的影響。

與其說「It is polyester」，不如說「It is polyester, so it dries quickly but does not feel very breathable」。與其說「It is wool」，不如說「It is a thick wool coat, so it is warm enough for winter」。

保養用語在店裡特別實用。可以問「Can I machine-wash this?」或「Does it shrink in the wash?」如果某樣東西需要特別保養，你可以說「I love the color, but I do not want anything dry-clean only」。

旅行時，材質詞彙能幫你打包行李。「I need lightweight clothes that do not wrinkle easily.」「I am bringing a fleece jacket because it is warm but not bulky.」「I prefer quick-drying shirts for hiking.」

學習者常犯的錯誤

別說「It is made by cotton.」要說「It is made of cotton」或「It is a cotton shirt」。

想表達「leather」時別用「skin」。「Leather」是用於外套、鞋子和包包的材質。「Skin」通常指人或動物身體的皮膚。

別把每樣防雨物品都說成「waterproof」。如果它只能應付小雨，就說「water-resistant」。

別把每種滑順的布料都叫做「silk」。Silk 是一種特定的材質。一件滑順的 polyester 女衫摸起來可能很有絲滑感，但它並不是 silk。

別把「warm」和「hot」搞混。如果衣服能在寒冷天氣裡保護你，那它就是 warm。一件厚毛衣是 warm，而不是「hot」，除非你想表達它讓你覺得太熱。
