A Cup of Coffee、A Piece of Advice、A Slice of Cake：英文的量詞用法
有位學習者在咖啡店櫃台說：「I want two coffees and a bread, please.」咖啡師勉強聽懂了，但母語人士會說的是：「Two coffees and a slice of bread」——或 two pieces、a roll、a baguette。少掉的那個小字，就是負責「計數」的 量詞（measure word）。
為什麼這個重要
英文裡有很多日常名詞無法直接計數，你不能說 three breads 或 two advices。要讓這些「整體性名詞」變得可以數，英文會借用一個能描述自然單位的小字——cup、slice、piece、sheet。同樣的技巧也能處理那些天生成對出現的東西，例如牛仔褲和剪刀。一旦熟悉了最常見的量詞，點餐、描述家具、列舉工具都會順手很多。
規則
基本結構是 a [量詞] of [名詞]，複數則是 two [量詞s] of [名詞]。複數的 -s 加在「量詞」上，而不是後面的名詞上。
- A slice of bread、two slices of bread——不是 two breads。
- A piece of advice、three pieces of advice——不是 three advices。
- A pair of jeans、two pairs of jeans——不是 two jeans。
量詞的選擇通常依照自然單位而定。Cup 用於熱飲，glass 用於冷飲，bottle 用於以瓶裝販售的東西，slice 用於從整條或整顆切下來的部分，piece 則在沒有更具體的字可用時派上用場。有些搭配略帶慣用色彩——你會說 a loaf of bread、a head of lettuce、a bunch of grapes，雖然 loaf、head、bunch 在別的情境裡聽起來會有點怪。

常見情境
在咖啡店點餐。對咖啡師說 two coffees 是可以的（被廣泛接受為 two cups of coffee 的簡稱）。但對於茶、湯，或任何想精確表達的東西，較完整的形式比較保險：a cup of green tea、two bowls of tomato soup、a glass of orange juice。
在麵包店。你幾乎不會點 a bread。你會點 a loaf of sourdough、two slices of rye、a baguette 或 three rolls。Loaf 是整條烤好的單位；slice 則是切下來的部分。
在超市。你買的是 a bunch of bananas、a head of lettuce、a carton of eggs、a jar of peanut butter、a can of soup、a bottle of water 與 a roll of paper towels。每一類食物都有自己天然的容器或集合方式，用對量詞會讓你聽起來更道地。
買衣服。Jeans、pants、trousers、shorts、leggings、tights、glasses、scissors 全都只有複數形。你一律以 a pair 來購買。I need a new pair of jeans，絕對不說 a new jean。Glasses（眼鏡）也適用同樣規則：a pair of glasses。
在公司領辦公用品。你會說 a sheet of paper、a roll of tape、a set of markers、a stack of folders 或 a box of pens。A paper 聽起來像論文或報紙，所以要指空白紙張時，sheet 比較清楚。
在家裡聊吃的。A slice of pizza、a bowl of cereal、a piece of chocolate、a bunch of grapes、a stick of butter、a clove of garlic。這些搭配大多是固定的，值得當成片語整組學起來。
常見錯誤
- 把 -s 加在名詞而不是量詞上：two slice of breads 應該是 two slices of bread。複數變化在「單位」，不在「物質」。
- 對不可數名詞完全省略量詞：a bread、a paper、a milk、a luggage。每一個都需要量詞。
- 在已有更具體量詞時還用 piece。A piece of bread 文法沒錯，但 a slice of bread 更精準。母語人士有具體量詞時偏好用具體的那個。
- 把成對名詞當單數：a jean、a trouser、a scissor、a glass（眼鏡）。原形已是複數，必須搭配 a pair of。
- 說 a pair of pants 之後又改用 it：動詞要維持複數——These pants are too long、They fit well。
- 忘記 fish 和 sheep 的複數形跟單數一樣。多數情境下你會說 three fish，不是 three fishes。
- 在正式寫作中濫用 a bunch of。它在口語裡很好用（a bunch of emails），但在正式英文中請改用 several、a number of 或 many。
