Average、Median、Range：學習者最常念錯的統計用語
某位學習者在寫作測驗描述一張圖表：「The average salary in the company is forty thousand dollars, and the median is twenty-five thousand.」家教打斷他：「如果中位數是兩萬五千，那就有一半員工領那個數字以下。平均四萬代表頂端少數人把數字拉高了。這是個值得講的故事——但前提是你用對字。」學習者的數字寫對了，但他沒意識到 average 和 median 描述的是不同概念。這兩個字在英文裡只差幾個字母，意思卻天差地遠。
為什麼這件事重要
統計用語會悄悄溜進新聞標題、運動轉播、商務會議、標準化考試的圖表描述，甚至討論薪資或房價的閒聊裡。記者說：「On average, families spend X.」朋友說：「The median home price in that neighborhood is too high for us.」教練說：「Her range is huge — she scored anywhere from 5 to 25 points per game.」如果你把這些字混在一起用，就會錯誤描述資料。在寫作或口說測驗裡，這會扣分；在會議裡，會扣信用。
用法規則
四個核心統計用語是 mean、median、mode、range。每個詞指向不同概念，也都有對應的日常英文片語。
Mean 是大多數人說的 the average（平均）的技術用語。計算 mean 的方式是把所有值加總，再除以值的個數。集合 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 的 mean 是 (2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10) ÷ 5 = 6。在英文裡，the mean 和 the average 通常可以互換：「The average score is six」和「The mean score is six」描述同一個數字。Average 偏日常；mean 偏技術。實用片語：on average、the average of、on a typical day。
Median 是把數字由小到大排序後的中間值。對 2, 4, 6, 8, 10，median 是 6。對 1, 3, 5, 7，median 是 (3 + 5) ÷ 2 = 4——當清單是偶數個值時，取中間兩個的 mean。Median 出名的特性是「不受極端值影響」。如果某小辦公室有一個人賺一千萬美元，average 薪水會被拉高，median 薪水幾乎不動。
Mode 是最常出現的值。對 2, 2, 3, 5, 5, 5, 7，mode 是 5。一組資料可以沒有 mode（所有值各出現一次）、一個 mode，或好幾個 mode（稱為 bimodal 或 multimodal）。Mode 是「最常見的東西」的日常英雄——問卷答案、T-shirt 尺寸、瞳色統計。
Range 是全距，計算方式是最大值減最小值。對 2, 4, 6, 8, 10，range 是 10 − 2 = 8。Range 回答的是：分布有多寬？ 它不是單一典型值，而是變異性的度量。
另外兩個值得知道的片語：
Outlier 是離其他值很遠的數值。「The team's outlier is the new hire, who finishes twice as many tickets as anyone else.」Outliers 會拉動 mean，但不會動到 median。
Standard deviation（標準差）是比較技術性的離散度測量。日常句子裡通常不需要定義它，但你可能在科學演講裡聽到。

常見情境
在寫作測驗描述圖表。 「The mean monthly rent in City A is $1,200, but the median is only $850. The gap suggests that a few very high rents are pulling the average up.」這就是會拿分的句子。兩個字搭配說一個故事：大多數租戶住在哪（median），以及資料偏斜的程度（mean 高於 median）。
談薪水。 「The average salary at this company is $80K, but I'd be more interested in the median if I were comparing offers.」當少數人比其他人賺得多很多或少很多，median 是比較誠實的典型值。寫薪資公平議題的人因此偏好 median。
運動話題。 「Her scoring range this season was 5 to 25 points. The average was 14, but she had three twenty-plus games.」三項統計——range、average、個別高分——一起拼出整個畫面。
會議裡的問卷結果。 「The mode for favorite color was blue, with 35 percent of responses.」當變數是類別（顏色、品牌、T-shirt 尺寸）而非數字時，mode 是自然選擇。
考試準備建議。 「Don't worry about the highest mean score on the practice tests — focus on whether your median score is improving week to week.」當你有幾天練習特別好或特別爛，median 比 mean 更誠實地呈現趨勢。
如果你想把「變化說法」疊在這些統計之上——描述 median 或 average 在兩個時期之間如何移動——percent、percentage 與 percentage points：小字差一字，意思差很多 是下一步。它跟統計天生搭配，因為圖表描述幾乎都會把兩者結合。
常見錯誤
- 互換 average 和 median。它們不一樣。Average 是總和除以個數；median 是排序後的中間值。
- 想說 median 卻寫成 medium。Medium 描述大小、強度、熟度（「medium-rare steak」）。Median 是統計用語。
- 用「最高與最低的平均」定義 range。Range 是「最高減最低」。那兩個值的平均稱為 midrange，是不一樣的概念。
- 把 mode 當成 typical 的同義詞。Mode 是「最常出現的值」，即使只比其他多出現一點點。
- 說 in average 而不是 on average。固定英文片語是 on average。
- 忘了 median 可能等於 mean。對稱資料中兩者重合；資料偏斜時差別才出來。
- 在 mean、median、mode 或 range 後說 equals to。動詞 equals 不接 to：the mean equals 6。
- 用 range 當動詞而不搭 from...to。名詞形式是 the range is 5 to 25；動詞形式是 the values range from 5 to 25。混用變成 the range from 5 to 25，不自然。
