「As Soon As Possible」與「When You Have a Chance」：如何設定急迫感
為什麼這個說法容易出錯
當你請別人做某件事時，你也需要告訴對方你多快需要它。有兩句話幾乎包辦了這項工作：'as soon as possible' 和 'when you have a chance'。它們分別位於急迫感量尺的兩個極端。
棘手的地方在於，學習者有時是出於習慣而非意思去挑選其中一句。如果你為一件不急的事說 'as soon as possible'，聽起來會咄咄逼人。如果你為一件今天真的很重要的事說 'when you have a chance'，對方可能不會意識到它的重要性。

當學習者加上一句表達急迫感的話時，通常想說的是以下其中一件事：
- 這件事有時效性，現在就需要處理。
- 這件事很重要，但還有一些彈性。
- 這只是一個小忙，任何時候都可以。
- 我不想給你壓力，但我終究還是需要它。
你選的那句話，應該對應其中哪一個才是真實的情況。
它聽起來會是什麼感覺
'As soon as possible' 傳達出真正的急迫感。當某件事確實無法等待時，它既誠實又實用。但如果用得太頻繁，或用在低優先順序的任務上，它聽起來會變得有點強人所難，而對方可能會開始忽略那份急迫感，因為一切看起來都很急。
'When you have a chance' 聽起來輕鬆又有禮。它非常適合用在真正的請託上。風險則正好相反：它聽起來可能太柔和，導致請求在對方的清單上往下滑，結果錯過了一個真正的期限。
這兩句話也都可能很模糊。'As soon as possible' 沒有說出時間，'when you have a chance' 也沒有。一個具體的時間，幾乎永遠都更清楚、也更體貼。

咄咄逼人：「Reply as soon as possible.」
