around、about、nearly、over、under:英文怎麼把數字講得「差不多」
某次會議裡,一位學習者說:「We have nearly thirty applicants, maybe thirty-two.」同事輕聲提醒她:「If it's thirty-two, that's over thirty, not nearly thirty.」nearly 是往下指——指還沒達到的數字;over 是往上指。
實際對話中,多數時候你並不需要精確的數字,而是估算:「About 20 people came.」、「Nearly midnight.」、「Just over a mile.」
「Roughly half the audience」適合用在報告裡;「about half」則適合口語。
over 與 more than 表示「在數字之上」。「Over 100 people came」是指至少 101 個。
under 與 less than 表示「在數字之下」。
just over 與 just under 多了一層「勉強」的意思。「Just over a mile」是指剛好超過 1 mile 一點點。
「Fifty people, give or take」就是大約 45 到 55 之間。
|---|---|---|
| We had nearly 32 applicants, more than 30. | We had over 30 applicants, around 32. |
| The meeting starts at about exactly 3 p.m. | The meeting starts at about 3 p.m. |
| I waited for nearly two hours, around two and a half. | I waited for over two hours, around two and a half. | nearly |
| Approximately 50-ish people came. | Approximately 50 people came. |
| There were under or equal 20 students. | There were 20 or fewer students. |
| It's almost 8 p.m., maybe 8:15. | It's just past 8 p.m., maybe 8:15. |
| Give and take 10 minutes | Give or take 10 minutes | 固定用法是 give OR take,不是 and。 |
| About of 30 people attended. | About 30 people attended.
「There were about 200 people at the concert — maybe a few more, maybe a few less.」如果實際數到 230,就改說「over 200」或「a little over 200」。
「It's just after 6」是指 6:01 到 6:10 左右。
「The phone costs just under $500.」 如果是 501,就會說「just over $500」。
「The flight is roughly five hours.」
「More than 60 percent of the staff voted in favor.」
「Add about a cup of flour. Give or take a little, depending on the dough.」
「Let's meet at the café 7-ish, sound good?」-ish
「Sales rose by just over 10 percent in Q1, then dropped nearly 5 percent in Q2.」just over
- 說 over than 或 under than。應該單獨用 over、under,或者用 more than、less than。
- 把 just over(略多)與 just under(略少)搞混。
- 把固定用法 give or take 講成 give and take。
- The trip took ______ three hours (3 hours and 5 minutes).
- We sold ______ 100 tickets (97 sold).
- The boss arrives at the office ______ 9 a.m. every day (somewhere from 8:50 to 9:10).
- The bag weighs ______ 5 pounds (4 pounds 14 ounces).
- The recipe makes ______ 12 cookies, give or take.
總結
表達「大概接近」用 about 和 around;同樣的意思但更正式時用 roughly 與 approximately;表示「還沒到」用 nearly 與 almost;表示「高於」用 over 與 more than;表示「低於」用 under 與 less than;要強調「勉強多/少一點」用 just over/just under。
