feet、inches、pounds、miles：美式單位求生指南
一位學習者在美國監理所被問到身高，他回答：「One hundred seventy-five centimeters.」承辦人微笑著問：「Could you give that to me in feet?」他當場愣住。世界大多數地方都用公制，但在美國，feet、pounds、miles、gallons 這些單位主導著日常生活。會用自然的英文談這些單位，是日常對話必備的一項生存技能。
為什麼這件事重要
不論你是住在美國、看美國節目，還是上網看商品介紹，美式慣用單位都會不斷出現。公寓用 square feet 計算，健身房的重量是 pounds，路標標示 miles，牛奶以 gallons 為單位，氣象播報用 degrees Fahrenheit。詞彙是固定的，但數字搭配這些單位時有一些小細節：在某些位置複數會消失，口語短話（例如把 5'10" 唸成「five ten」）更是到處都是。一旦你抓到模式，就能直接用英文談距離、尺寸與重量，不需要在腦袋裡換算。
用法規則
身高用 feet 和 inches 一起表示。5'10" 念作「five ten」（很口語）或「five foot ten」（較標準）。注意：後面接 inches 時，要用 foot 而不是 feet。
體重用 pounds（常縮寫為 lbs）。講人的體重時，「one fifty」或「a hundred and fifty pounds」都行。講包裝時則是「a five-pound bag」——單位放在名詞前面當形容詞用時，要把 -s 去掉。
距離用 miles。「Ten miles north」、「a half-mile walk」、「about a mile away」。1 mile 大約是 1.6 公里。
液體容量用 gallons、quarts、pints、cups 與 fluid ounces。咖啡是 16-ounce 杯裝；牛奶以 gallons 或 half-gallons 賣。
溫度在美國用 Fahrenheit，寫作 °F。一般天氣大約在 30°F（冷）到 90°F（熱）之間。體溫是 98.6°F。

常見情境
在診所。「What's your height and weight?」「I'm five seven, around one forty.」（5'7" 和大約 140 lbs。）醫生一聽就懂這些口語短話。
問路。「Go about three miles north on the main road. The exit is in about a mile and a half.」注意 mile 怎麼跟 a half 搭配：「a mile and a half」或「one and a half miles」。
找公寓。「It's a 700-square-foot one-bedroom on the third floor.」當 square feet 變成 apartment 前面的形容詞時，要把 -s 去掉：a 700-square-foot apartment。
逛超市。「I need a gallon of milk, a pound of ground beef, and a 12-ounce bag of coffee.」液體用 gallons、肉用 pound 為單位、包裝商品用 ounces。
健身房。「I can bench press one thirty-five.」舉重時常省略 pounds，因為槓片重量是標準的；「one thirty-five」就是 135 lbs。
看天氣。「It's gonna be in the high 80s today, with humidity around 70 percent.」溫度常常分組講成「the 70s」、「the 80s」、「the 90s」，不講確切數字。
公路旅行。「We've got about 200 miles to go — that's a three-hour drive if traffic stays light.」在美國談旅行時，行駛時間與距離常會一起講。
常見錯誤
- 該用 foot 時用了 feet：要說「five foot ten」，不是「five feet ten」。
- 複合修飾語忘了去掉 -s：應該是 a five-pound bag、a ten-mile race、a 900-square-foot apartment。
- 把 pounds（重量）和 pound（英國貨幣）搞混。同樣的字，但單位不同。
- 在美國的日常對話裡直接用公制單位，沒有換算——大多數美國人很難立刻想像 175 公分或 65 公斤是多少。
- 在美國說 centigrade。美國天氣預報除非特別註明，都是用 Fahrenheit。
- 忘了美國 gallon（約 3.8 公升）比英國 gallon（約 4.5 公升）大不少。
- 把 5'10" 一個字母一個符號念出來（「five apostrophe ten quote」），而不是「five ten」或「five foot ten」。
公制快速對照
如果你需要快速心算換算：
- 1 mile ≈ 1.6 公里
- 1 foot ≈ 30 公分
- 1 inch ≈ 2.5 公分
- 1 pound ≈ 0.45 公斤（所以 100 lbs ≈ 45 公斤）
- 1 gallon ≈ 3.8 公升（美國）或 4.5 公升（英國）
- °F 換 °C：減 32，再除以 2（粗略估計）。所以 90°F 大約是 32°C。
