單數定複數?TOEFL 最鍾意嘅可數性陷阱
一位學習者正喺度寫一篇 Write for an Academic Discussion 回應。題目提到幾項證據同多個研究。佢寫:「The professor presents many informations and evidences to challenge the readings.」一句裏面三個可數性錯誤。啲想法好。文法唔好。
英文嘅可數性唔一定符合常識。有啲睇落明顯係複數嘅名詞——information、advice、research——頑固地不可數。有啲睇落明顯係單數嘅名詞——jeans、scissors、glasses——永遠係複數。而一小組名詞坐喺爭議地帶:data,舉個例,喺唔同學術風格入面有唔同處理。

點解呢樣嘢喺 TOEFL iBT 2026 好重要
可數性錯誤好顯眼。"Many informations" 或者 "a few advices" 係嗰種評分員即刻留意到嘅錯誤。佢用一種少有其他錯誤做得到嘅方式,標示「語言運用仍喺發展中」。
喺 Writing 度,尤其係正式 Writing,搞啱可數性係聽落學術嘅一部分。"The author provides three pieces of evidence" 聽落精緻。"The author provides three evidences" 唔係。
喺 Speaking 度,口語訊號唔同但係同樣顯眼。"Much homework" 聽落啱;"Many homeworks" 聽落粗糙。"A little advice" 聽落啱;"A few advices" 喺標準英文裏面唔存在。
喺 Reading 度,可數性話你知作者講緊邊種嘢。"The research shows..."(成個領域,或者一整體嘅研究)。"The studies show..."(多個不同嘅研究)。文法上嘅數會影響個主張嘅範圍。
陷阱
三個陷阱造成大部分可數性錯誤。
1. 將不可數名詞當作可數名詞。 最嚴重嘅犯規者:information、advice、research、equipment、furniture、knowledge、evidence、feedback、homework、news。冇一個會接「-s」複數。冇一個會直接接「a/an」。要數佢哋,你需要一個計量詞:a piece of information、two pieces of evidence、some advice、much research。
2. 數量詞唔配對。「Much」配不可數;「many」配可數。「Less」配不可數;「fewer」配可數。「A little」配不可數;「a few」配可數。將呢啲混埋一齊係小錯誤嘅恆常來源。
3. 爭議情況。 Data 喺正式學術 Writing 入面係文法上嘅複數(the data show),而喺口語/商業英文裏面通常係單數(the data shows)。Media 相似。TOEFL Writing 揀學術版本,並保持一致。

「fewer/less」嘅區別係 TOEFL 上面最常被考嘅可數性規則之一。好多母語人士喺隨意口語入面會講「less people」,但係正式 Writing 要求「fewer people」。喺考試上面保持嚴格。
邊度會出現
Academic Discussion。 當你引用原因或者證據時,錯嘅數量詞會暴露自己。"There are many evidence"——錯,因為「evidence」不可數。較好:"There is much evidence" 或者 "There are many pieces of evidence."
Write an Email。 禮貌地要求建議或者資訊會觸發個陷阱。"Could you please send me more informations about the program?" 對評分員嚟講聽落唔啱;"Could you please send me more information about the program?" 聽落精緻。
Write for an Academic Discussion。 回應學術主張往往需要用到 evidence、research、data、findings 嗰啲字。頭三個喺學術 Writing 入面不可數;「findings」係可數複數。將佢哋混淆係學術回應裏面最常見嘅錯誤之一。
Listen to announcements and academic talks。 喺聆聽壓力下,學習者喺筆記同跟進練習裏面對所有嘢都預設用「many」。"The professor gives many information" 會滑出嚟。修正方法係練習替換:"a lot of information" 感覺更安全,因為「a lot of」可數同不可數都行得通。
快速修正
考試上面一個行得通嘅做法:
- 背熟核心不可數清單。 Information、advice、research、equipment、furniture、knowledge、evidence、feedback、homework、news、software、traffic、weather、vocabulary。呢啲永遠唔接「-s」複數,亦永遠唔直接接「a/an」。
- 用計量詞技巧。 當你需要數嘅時候,講 a piece of、an item of、two examples of、several types of。對 information、advice、evidence、research 尤其有用。
- 將數量詞配對可數類型。 Many/few/fewer + 可數複數。Much/little/less + 不可數。A lot of / some / any 兩者皆可——當你唔肯定時係有用嘅安全選項。
- 對「data」同「media」,揀正式。 喺學術 TOEFL Writing 入面,兩者都當作複數:the data show、the media report。喺一個回應裏面保持一致。
- 對「number of」對「amount of」: Number → 可數,amount → 不可數。A large number of students 對 a large amount of time.

提交前要檢查啲咩
- 掃描「informations」、「advices」、「researches」、「evidences」、「equipments」、「furnitures」。任何一個 = 錯誤。
- 你有冇將「many」配複數可數名詞、將「much」配不可數名詞?唔好混。
- 對「less」同「fewer」,檢查:個名詞係咪你可以數嘅嘢?如果係,「fewer」。如果唔係,「less」。
- 對「amount of」同「number of」,同樣檢查:可數 → number,不可數 → amount。
- 你嘅回應裏面有冇出現「data」?喺正式 Writing 入面,當作複數(the data show)並保持一致。
最後一個提示。如果你發現自己卡喺一個字係咪可數,最安全嘅救命短語係 "a lot of." 佢兩種類型都行得通,而且好少聽落唔啱。"The professor gave us a lot of useful information" 永遠安全。"a lot of evidence"、"a lot of feedback" 同 "a lot of homework" 都一樣。當個計時器去到三十秒,「a lot of」係你嘅朋友。
仔細睇下計量詞
計量詞係不可數名詞最有用嘅工具。佢哋讓你數一啲文法上抗拒被數嘅嘢,方法係將佢放入一個可數嘅容器裏面。
- A piece of——萬用計量詞。A piece of information, a piece of advice, a piece of evidence, a piece of furniture.
- An item of——稍為正式啲。An item of equipment, an item of clothing.
- A bit of——非正式。喺 Speaking 入面有用,但唔適合正式 Writing。A bit of advice, a bit of help.
- A type of / a kind of——用嚟講一個不可數名詞裏面嘅類別。A type of research, a kind of feedback.
- An example of——當你想介紹一個特定例子時。An example of evidence the author provides...
呢啲計量詞喺 Write for an Academic Discussion 裏面尤其有用,喺嗰度你不停咁提及特定嘅證據同研究。"The first piece of evidence the professor provides..." "A second type of research that supports this view..."
