點解咁緊要
乘法字眼出現喺商業報告、科學論文、新聞標題、課堂報告同圖表描述裏面。同一句話可以因應你讀者有幾嚴謹而被讀成兩個唔同嘅意思。如果你嘅對象係數學取向 —— 一位科學老師、一位數據分析師、一位謹慎嘅編輯 —— 揀一個清晰啲嘅短語就可以慳返一場關於你究竟想表達乜嘅長篇討論。如果你嘅對象係隨意嘅,較安全嘅形式仍然聽落自然。呢個修正只需要一兩個字。
規律
有三組短語。每一組讀法都稍為唔同。
Three times as big as 解作 等於原本嘅三倍。如果 A three times as big as B,而 B 係 100,咁 A 就係 300。呢個係多數編輯同科學老師認為無歧義嘅形式。當你想完全冇爭拗空間嘅時候用佢。
Three times the size of 係同一個概念,只係換咗件衫。A three times the size of B → A 係 3 × B。其他版本:three times the price of、three times the height of、three times the population of。
Three times bigger than 就係嗰個具爭議嘅。嚴謹嘅讀者話 bigger than 標示緊一個比較,所以「three times bigger」必定解作原本嘅 加 三倍原本,即係原本嘅四倍。好多 native speaker 就用佢嚟單純表示 三倍咁大。因為呢個分歧,謹慎嘅作者會避開佢。如果你想嚴謹,就講 three times as big as。如果你想強調而又冇歧義,就講 three times larger(部分人仍然有爭議),又或者索性用數字改寫句子:300 units versus 100 units。
Three times more than 有同樣嘅問題。嚴謹讀法:原本 + 三倍原本 = 原本嘅四倍。常見讀法:原本嘅三倍。再一次,安全嘅做法係 three times as much as 或者直接用數字比較。
仲有兩個有用嘅短語:
Double、triple、quadruple 清晰而簡短。「Sales doubled」即係變成兩倍。「Profit tripled」即係三倍。呢啲動詞無歧義 —— 冇人會就 doubled 嗌交。

常見情境
喺寫作題目描述棒形圖。安全嘅措辭:「In 2025, the company's revenue was three times that of 2024」或者「Revenue in 2025 was three times as high as in 2024」。有風險嘅措辭:「Revenue was three times more than in 2024」—— 嚴謹讀者會當佢係四倍。
比較兩個城市。「City A has a population three times the size of City B.」呢句唔會引起爭拗。對比之下:「City A is three times larger」—— 多數讀者會估到你嘅意思,但謹慎嘅讀者會停一停。
科學堂。「The new prototype is twice as efficient as the old one.」Twice as efficient 普遍清晰。避免 twice more efficient;對嚴謹讀者嚟講,佢會傾向解成效率嘅三倍。
銷售會議。「We tripled our subscribers this quarter.」簡短、清晰、冇爭論。如果老闆問:「Tripled 究竟係咩意思?」你可以答:「It is three times the start of the quarter」,然後大家都同意。
