"I arrived in time for the movie, in the end."

Native speaker 會講:「I arrived on time for the movie, in the end.」

In the end = 最終、最後。
  • On time = 啱啱準時。In time = 夠早、嚟得切。
On purpose = 故意。
  • At first = 起初。
  • In the morning / afternoon / evening,但 at night

  • ❌ "I arrived in time for class."(你想講啱啱上堂果一刻到)→ ✅ "I arrived on time for class." · "On time" 意思係準時;"in time" 意思係夠早、留有 margin。
  • ❌ "At the end, we decided to stay home." → ✅ "In the end, we decided to stay home." · "In the end" 意思係最終;"at the end" 指時間或空間上嘅具體位置。
  • ❌ "I came by foot." → ✅ "I came on foot."
  • ❌ "I broke it in accident." → ✅ "I broke it by accident."
  • ❌ "I usually study in night." → ✅ "I usually study at night." · Morning、afternoon、evening 用 "in";night 例外咁用 "at"。
  • ❌ "On the long run, exercise helps your mood." → ✅ "In the long run, exercise helps your mood." · "In the long run" 係固定片語;英文入面冇 "on the long run" 呢個講法。
  • ❌ "At last week I saw him." → ✅ "Last week I saw him."

  1. The meeting starts at 9. Please be there _____ time.
  2. I didn't mean to send that text. It was completely _____ accident.
  3. I prefer to exercise _____ the morning before work.
  4. _____ the end, we never solved the mystery, but we had fun trying.
  5. He cycles to the office, but in winter he goes _____ bus.

答案

  1. on —— "On time" 意思係啱啱喺安排嘅時間,呢個正係 "please be there" 所暗示嘅。
  2. by —— 非故意嘅動作永遠用 "by accident",從來唔係 "in accident" 或者 "on accident"。
  3. in —— "In the morning / afternoon / evening"
  4. In —— "In the end" 意思係最終、作為最後結果 —— 同 "at the end"(標示一個位置)唔同。
  5. by —— 交通方式(除咗行路)永遠係 "by" + 冇冠詞:by bus、by car、by plane。

at the end(指結果) in the end 最終、最後
in time(指準時) on time 啱啱按時間表
in accident by accident 非故意
by foot on foot 行路
in night at night
on the long run in the long run
at the morning in the morning
