Feet、Inches、Pounds、Miles:點樣應付美式單位
有個學英文嘅人喺美國車牌局辦事,職員問佢身高。佢答:「One hundred seventy-five centimeters。」職員笑笑口問:「Could you give that to me in feet?」佢即刻呆咗。世界上大部分地方都用公制,但喺美國,feet、pounds、miles、gallons 呢啲單位主宰住日常生活。識得用自然嘅英文講呢啲嘢,係應付日常對話嘅一部分。
點解呢樣嘢重要
無論你住喺美國、睇美國節目,定係上網睇產品介紹,美國慣用單位都會不斷出現。住宅面積用 square feet 計,健身室啞鈴用 pounds 計,路牌用 miles,牛奶用 gallons,天氣報告就用 degrees Fahrenheit。詞彙係固定嘅,但數字點樣接落呢啲單位就有啲細微變化 —— 喺某啲位置複數會消失,而且口語短講法(例如用「five ten」代表 5'10")周圍都係。一旦你掌握咗呢啲規律,就可以講距離、尺寸同重量,而唔使喺腦入面譯嚟譯去。
規律
身高(Height) 係 feet 同 inches 一齊講。5'10" 呢個數讀做「five ten」(好口語)或者「five foot ten」(較標準)。留意接住 inches 嗰陣係用 foot,唔係 feet。
體重(Weight) 用 pounds(通常縮寫做 lbs)。講人嘅體重,「one fifty」或者「a hundred and fifty pounds」都得。講包裝物件就講「a five-pound bag」—— 當單位行喺名詞前面、當形容詞用嗰陣,就要去咗個 -s。
距離(Distance) 用 miles。「Ten miles north」、「a half-mile walk」、「about a mile away」。一 mile 大約等於 1.6 公里。
容量(Volume) 講液體就用 gallons、quarts、pints、cups 同 fluid ounces。咖啡用 16-ounce 嘅杯;牛奶就用 gallons 或者 half-gallons。

喺醫生診所。「What's your height and weight?」「I'm five seven, around one forty。」(即係 5'7" 同大約 140 lbs。)醫生會即刻聽得明呢啲短講法。
指路。「Go about three miles north on the main road. The exit is in about a mile and a half。」留意 mile 點樣同 a half 結合:「a mile and a half」或者「one and a half miles」。
搵屋。「It's a 700-square-foot one-bedroom on the third floor。」當 square feet 變成 apartment 前面嘅形容詞嗰陣,就要去咗 -s:a 700-square-foot apartment。
雜貨店。「I need a gallon of milk, a pound of ground beef, and a 12-ounce bag of coffee。」液體用 gallons,肉論 pound 計,包裝貨用 ounces。
健身室。「I can bench press one thirty-five。」舉重嘅人成日省略 pounds,因為啞鈴片係標準重量。「One thirty-five」即係 135 lbs。
睇天氣。「It's gonna be in the high 80s today, with humidity around 70 percent。」溫度成日會以「the 70s」、「the 80s」、「the 90s」呢啲組合嚟講,而唔講確切數字。
公路旅行。「We've got about 200 miles to go — that's a three-hour drive if traffic stays light。」喺美國嘅旅遊對話入面,行車時間同距離係一齊講嘅。
常犯嘅錯誤
- 應該用 foot 嗰陣講咗 feet:係「five foot ten」,唔係「five feet ten」。
- 喺複合形容詞入面唔記得去 -s:a five-pound bag、a ten-mile race、a 900-square-foot apartment。
- 混淆 pounds(重量)同 pound(英國貨幣)。佢哋係同一個字,但係唔同單位。
- 喺美式口語對話入面用咗公制單位又唔換算 —— 大部分美國人冇辦法即刻想像到 175 cm 或者 65 kg 係幾多。
- 喺美國講咗 centigrade。美國天氣一律用 Fahrenheit,除非特別註明。
