Before a Blood Test, X-ray, Ultrasound, CT, or MRI: The English You Need
After the doctor says "Let's order some tests," the rest of the visit usually goes like this: you take an order to a lab, imaging center, or pharmacy; the front desk asks what test it is, whether you're fasting, and whether you have any metal implants. Each test has a short English script, but a single word (contrast, fast, claustrophobic) can throw you off. Memorize a few sentences for each of the five common test categories — blood, urine, X-ray, ultrasound, CT, MRI — and the whole testing process gets much smoother.

Situational Dialogue: An MRI at an Imaging Center
Receptionist: Hi, do you have an order for today?
You: Yes, an MRI of my right knee. My referring doctor is Dr. Patel.
Receptionist: Have you ever had any metal implants, surgeries with clips, or a pacemaker?
You: I had ACL surgery in 2018, so I have surgical screws in my knee. No pacemaker, no other implants.
Technician: That's fine for MRI, but the screws may show up on the images. The scan will take about 30 minutes. The machine is loud — you'll have earplugs and a button to press if you need to stop.
You: Thank you. I get a little claustrophobic — could we do a quick test entry first to see how I feel?
Technician: Absolutely. Let's do that.
You: When will the results be ready, and how will I get them?
Technician: Usually 24–48 hours. They'll go to Dr. Patel and to your patient portal.
