Percent, Percentage, Percentage Points: 작은 단어, 큰 실수
한 학습자가 차트 설명에서 이렇게 썼습니다. "Unemployment increased by 5 percent, from 30 percent to 35 percent." 얼핏 들으면 그럴듯하지만, 계산해 보면 이상합니다. 30%에서 35%로 가는 것은 5 percentage points 상승이지, 5 percent 상승이 아닙니다. (30의 5 percent는 1.5에 불과합니다.) 작은 단어 셋, 그러나 의미는 완전히 다릅니다.
왜 중요한가
차트, 설문, 뉴스, 비즈니스 이메일에는 백분율이 가득합니다. TOEFL이나 IELTS 과제에서 데이터를 설명하거나 회의에서 매출 수치를 다룰 때 단어 하나만 잘못 써도 의미가 크게 어긋날 수 있습니다. 숫자에 민감한 독자는 금세 알아채며, 부주의한 표현은 자신감 있는 화자조차 흔들리게 보이게 만듭니다. 다행히 규칙은 짧고, 패턴만 익히면 다시는 헷갈리지 않습니다.
패턴
Percent(혹은 기호 %)는 구체적인 숫자와 함께 씁니다. "twenty-five percent"라고 말하거나 "25%"라고 적습니다. 숫자에 붙는 단위처럼 작동합니다.
Percentage는 일반 명사입니다. 구체적인 숫자 없이 a, the, small, large, what 같은 단어와 함께 자주 쓰입니다. "a small percentage of students" 또는 "what percentage of the budget"처럼 말합니다.
Percentage point(혹은 percentage points)는 두 백분율 사이의 산술적 차이를 나타냅니다. 점수가 70%에서 75%로 올랐다면 5 percentage points 상승한 것이지, 5 percent 상승한 것이 아닙니다.

자주 쓰이는 상황
선 그래프 묘사하기. "The unemployment rate rose from 4% in January to 6% in June, an increase of two percentage points." percentage points가 차이를 분명히 알려 주는 것에 주목하세요.
설문 결과 보고하기. "About 65 percent of respondents said they were satisfied. Only a small percentage gave a negative answer." 첫 문장은 숫자가 있으므로 percent를, 두 번째는 일반 진술이므로 percentage를 씁니다.
시험 점수 이야기하기. "My reading score went up 8 percentage points, from 22 to 30 (out of 30)." 만약 8 percent라고 했다면, 듣는 사람은 8 percent of what인지 의아해할 수 있습니다.
비즈니스 회의. "Our market share grew from 12% to 18% last year — six percentage points of growth, which is roughly a 50 percent increase relative to where we started." 이 문장은 두 표현을 함께 씁니다. 절대적 차이는 percentage points로, 상대적 변화는 percent로 표현합니다.
뉴스 헤드라인 읽기. "Inflation eased by 0.3 percentage points." 금융 기자들은 이 구분에 엄격합니다. 부주의한 percent 하나가 독자를 오도할 수 있기 때문입니다.
선거 보도. "The candidate's support climbed by four percentage points after the debate." four percent라고 하면 4%의 상대적 증가로 들려, 훨씬 작은 변화로 비칩니다.
흔한 실수
- 두 백분율을 비교할 때 percent를 쓰는 것 — percentage points를 써야 합니다.
- percents처럼 -s를 붙이는 것. Percent는 어떤 숫자가 와도 형태가 바뀌지 않습니다.
- by와 to 혼동: increased by 10%(10% 만큼 변화) vs. increased to 10%(새 값이 10%).
- percentage 뒤의 of를 빠뜨리기: "a percentage of the population"이지, "a percentage the population"이 아닙니다.
- 구체적인 숫자에 percentage를 쓰기 — "30 percent"라고 해야지 "30 percentage"가 아닙니다.
- 차트에서 "rose 5 percent"와 "rose 5 percentage points"를 같다고 여기기. 거의 절대 같지 않습니다.
- "% point"라고 마치 수학 기호처럼 쓰기. 풀어서 percentage points라고 적습니다.
