Opening Hook

한 섹션을 끝냅니다. 숨을 한 번 들이쉽니다. 그리고 "Next slide"라고 말합니다. 그 순간, 지난 2분 동안 만들어온 따뜻한 분위기가 증발해버립니다. 청중은 "오, 흥미로운데"에서 "아 맞다, 이거 프레젠테이션이었지"로 휙 돌아옵니다. 전환(transition)은 영어 프레젠테이션에서 가장 과소평가되는 기술입니다. 잘하면 아무도 알아차리지 못하지만, 못하면 모두가 느끼거든요. 다행인 건, 거의 모든 상황을 해결해주는 전환 표현이 열 개 정도밖에 안 된다는 점입니다.

The Problem

영어의 기본 전환은 두 가지 범주로 떨어집니다: 너무 기계적이거나 너무 깁니다. "Next slide"는 너무 기계적입니다 — 회의실의 기하학적 배치가 바뀐다는 것 말고는 청중에게 아무것도 알려주지 않습니다. "Now I would like to move on to the next section of my presentation, which is about…"는 너무 깁니다 — 새 주제에 도달할 무렵에는 청중의 주의가 이미 흩어져 있습니다.

실제로 필요한 건 두 가지 일을 한 번에 하는 문장입니다. 이전 포인트를 닫고("so that's the problem") 다음 포인트를 여는("now here's what we did about it") 문장이죠. 두 가지를 한 호흡에 처리하면, 발표가 연결되지 않은 슬라이드의 나열이 아니라 하나의 연속된 생각처럼 느껴집니다. 그게 전부입니다.

질문으로 연결하기

  • "Which raises the obvious question: what now?"

  • "And then something happened that we didn't plan for."

Common Mistake

학습자가 전환에서 저지르는 가장 큰 실수는 각 섹션을 작은 독립 프레젠테이션처럼 취급하는 것입니다. 그러면 매번 작은 인트로가 필요해집니다: "Okay, now I will talk about the next topic. The next topic is user feedback. There are three points about user feedback. The first point is…" 매번 다시 시작할 때마다 추진력이 죽습니다. 대신, 프레젠테이션을 다섯 개의 짧은 단락이 아니라 쉼표로 이어진 하나의 긴 문장으로 생각하세요. 각 섹션은 이전 섹션을 끌어당겨야 합니다, 새로 시작하는 게 아니라요.

이 실수와 가까운 친척: 발표 중간에 구조를 알리는 것. 원어민 발표자는 "now I will discuss my third point"라고 말하는 일이 거의 없습니다. 구조는 알리는 게 아니라 느껴지게 합니다. 처음에 세 가지를 약속했다면, 진행하면서 그것들을 굳이 라벨링할 필요가 없습니다. 그냥 "Okay, second thing —"이라고 말하고, 청중이 알아서 따라온다고 믿으세요.

  1. 본인이 했던 프레젠테이션을 하나 골라 모든 "next slide"나 "moving on"을 찾아 닫고-열기 문장으로 다시 써보세요.
  2. 무작위 주제 두 개(예: 커피와 도시 교통)를 고르고, 하나를 닫고 다른 하나를 여는 한 문장 전환을 써보세요. 유연성을 키우는 재미있는 연습입니다.
  3. 60초짜리 발표를 세 섹션으로 녹음하세요. 각 전환마다 다른 스타일을 사용하세요.
  4. TED 강연 하나를 보면서 발표자가 사용하는 모든 전환을 받아 적어보세요. 그들이 구조를 거의 알리지 않고도 청중을 끌어당긴다는 걸 알게 됩니다.
