소수, 분수, 비율을 멈칫하지 않고 말하는 법
비즈니스 회의 중 한 학습자가 3.14라는 수치를 소리 내어 읽으며 "three point fourteen"이라고 말했습니다. 잠시 정적이 흘렀고, 누군가 부드럽게 고쳐 주었습니다. "three point one four." 사소해 보이지만, 강의나 전화 통화, TOEFL 듣기 영역에서 숫자를 말하는 방식을 놓치면 문장 하나를 통째로 잃을 수 있습니다.
왜 중요한가
소수, 분수, 비율은 종이 위에 적힌 모습과 입으로 읽는 모습이 사뭇 다릅니다. 원어민은 문장 한가운데에 자연스럽게 끼워 넣곤 합니다. "The recipe calls for two thirds of a cup, and the ratio is about three to one." 이런 숫자를 글로만 본 학습자는 흐름을 놓치기 쉽습니다. 패턴은 한 번만 보면 단순하고, 요리, 날씨, 금융, 스포츠 점수, 학술 강연 등 어디에서나 등장합니다.
패턴
소수는 소수점 뒤에서 한 자리씩 읽습니다. 0.5는 "zero point five" 또는 그냥 "point five"입니다. 3.14는 "three point one four"이지, "three point fourteen"이 아닙니다. 소수점 뒤의 숫자는 한 자리씩 따로 읽습니다. point라는 단어가 기호를 대신합니다.
분수는 분모에 서수를 쓰고, 분자가 1보다 크면 -s를 붙입니다. 그래서 1/3은 "one third" 또는 "a third"이고, 2/3은 "two thirds"입니다. 반(half) 계열은 불규칙합니다. 1/2은 "a half" 또는 "one half"입니다.
*비율에는 두 수 사이에 to를 씁니다.* 2:1은 "two to one"입니다. 전체에 대한 비율을 말할 때는 in을 자주 씁니다. 1 in 5는 "one in five"(다섯 중 하나)라는 뜻입니다.

자주 쓰이는 상황
함께 요리하기. "Add a third of a cup of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt. If you want it sweeter, go up to two thirds." a third와 two thirds에 주목하세요. one third나 two third가 아닙니다.
일기 예보. "There's a 30 percent chance of rain, with about 0.4 inches expected by evening." 화자는 "zero point four inches" 또는 "point four inches"라고 말할 것입니다.
카페에서 더치페이. "Let's split this three ways — that's about twelve dollars each." 비용을 나눌 때 영어는 분수 대신 N ways를 자주 씁니다.
학술 강의. "Roughly one in seven adults reports difficulty sleeping, and the ratio of women to men in the sample is about three to two." one in seven과 three to two 모두 빠르게 지나갑니다. 작은 단어 in과 to를 놓치면 관계 자체를 잃어버립니다.
온라인 쇼핑. "The screen is 6.1 inches, and the battery lasts 1.5 days." 소리 내어 읽으면 "six point one inches"와 "one and a half days"(기술 문맥에서는 "one point five days")가 됩니다.
스포츠 중계. "It's two to one at halftime, and the shot accuracy is up to fifty-five percent." 점수는 to를 써서 읽고, 백분율은 여전히 그 자체의 규칙을 따릅니다.
흔한 실수
- 소수를 점 뒤에서 자리별로 읽지 않고 "three point fourteen"처럼 통째로 읽기.
- 분수에서 복수 -s를 빠뜨리기("two thirds" 대신 "two third"라고 말하기).
- of를 빠뜨리는 굳은 표현에서 무리하게 of를 넣기: half an hour, half a day, half the class.
- 일상 회화에서 a half가 더 자연스러운 자리에 one half를 쓰기("a half-hour break").
