Would, Could, Might: 現実感を変える小さな言葉

"Send me the file."

直接的です。明確です。同時に、同僚が画面を見つめながら「おはようございます、も言えないのか」とつぶやく種類の文かもしれません。

"Could you send me the file?"

同じ依頼ですが、温度が違います。

これが would、could、might の魔法です。小さな言葉ですが、文の雰囲気を変えます。考えをやわらかく、丁寧に、不確かに、想像的に、慎重に、または役立つ形にできます。飾りではありません。現実感を調整するつまみです。

まず答え

Would、could、might は modal verbs です。modal verbs は別の動詞の base form の前に来ます。

• would go

後ろに to を足しません。

• could to help

-s も足しません。

• She could helps.

基本的な意味は次の通りです。

• Would は、想像、好み、丁寧な依頼、過去の反復習慣、予想される結果をよく表します。
• Could は、能力、可能性、許可、丁寧な依頼をよく表します。
• Might は、可能性、不確かさ、やわらかい提案をよく表します。

これらはしばしば、will、can、may よりも文を絶対的でない感じにします。

パターン

Will は強く直接的です。

• I will call you.

Would は、文を想像、丁寧さ、条件の意味へ動かします。

• I would call you, but my phone is dead.
• Would you call me later?

Can は直接的な能力です。

• I can help.

Could は、過去の能力、やわらかい能力、可能性、丁寧な依頼になれます。

• I could swim when I was five.
• I could help after lunch.
• Could you open the window?

May はやや正式に聞こえることがあります。

• It may rain.

Might は、もっと控えめに聞こえます。

• It might rain.

文法の形はシンプルです。

subject + modal + base verb

• She would enjoy this.
• They could join us.
• We might need more time.

否定文では次の形です。

• would not = wouldn't
• could not = couldn't
• might not = might not

過去についての perfect forms は次の形です。

modal + have + past participle

• would have gone
• could have helped
• might have missed

これらは、想像上または不確かな過去の状況についてよく使われます。

雰囲気の違いは大事です。Can you help? は能力について直接たずねます。Could you help? はより丁寧に助けを求めます。Will you review this? は普通の未来の依頼に聞こえます。Would you review this? は距離とやわらかさを加えます。It may fail は正式または技術的に聞こえることがあります。It might fail は、より会話的で確信が低い感じになります。

この距離は便利です。すべての文が重い足音で到着する必要はありません。仕事のメッセージ、フィードバック、招待、訂正では、これらの modal が、はっきり言いながら警告看板のように聞こえない助けになります。

Would: 想像上の結果

想像した条件に結果が依存するとき、would を使います。

• I would travel more if flights were cheaper.
• She would accept the offer if the schedule were flexible.

条件は言われている場合も、文脈で理解される場合もあります。

隠れた考えは「それをやったら」または「その状況では」です。

Would: 丁寧な依頼

過去の能力や可能な能力には could を使います。

Could: 丁寧な依頼

Could は英語で最も便利な依頼語の一つです。

直接の命令より要求が強く聞こえません。

Could: 可能性

確実ではないけれど可能なとき、could を使います。

• The delay could affect the launch.

Might: 不確かさ

可能だが不確かなとき、might を使います。

• I might be late.
• She might not see the message in time.
• This answer might need more detail.

確信が強すぎるように聞こえたくないとき、might は便利です。

Might: やわらかい提案

何かをやさしく提案するとき、might を使います。

• You might want to save a backup copy.

これは "You should." より外交的に聞こえることがよくあります。

Modal perfects: 選ばれなかった道

過去の可能性について話すとき、would have、could have、might have を使います。

• I would have joined, but I had another meeting.

違いは小さいですが便利です。

• would have: 想像上の結果
• could have: 可能だった能力、または逃した機会

落とし穴 1: modal の後に to を足す

落とし穴 3: 一回だけ成功した過去の行動に could を使う

一般的な過去の能力なら could が使えます。

一回だけ成功した過去の行動には、was able to または simple past を使います。

落とし穴 4: うっかり依頼が強すぎる

"Give me your phone number" は文法的には正しいですが、しばしば鋭すぎます。次のようにできます。

• Could you give me your phone number?
• Would you mind sharing your phone number?

落とし穴 5: might have と might を混同する

• She might forget the meeting. 未来または一般的な可能性。
• She might have forgotten the meeting. 過去の出来事の可能性。

have + past participle の形は、可能性を過去へ動かします。

落とし穴 6: 丁寧な文すべてに would を使う

丁寧さに万能の一つはありません。Would は便利ですが、依頼では could のほうが自然なことも多いです。
