TOEFL Writing と Speaking の前置詞トラップ

ある受験者が Academic Discussion 解答を最後にもう一度読んでいます。"I agree to my classmate's point because the success of the policy depends from how strictly it is enforced. Different from what some people think, the issue is similar with the one we discussed last week." 2 つの文に前置詞ミスが 3 つ — 10 分間のライティングタイマーは残り 45 秒です。

Prepositions は、英語の中で最も小さな単語でありながら、文を最も大きく「不自然」に響かせる力を持ちます。Depend on. Focus on. Agree with. Interested in. Similar to. Different from. これらのペアは固定です。動詞がなぜある前置詞を取り、別の前置詞を取らないのか、論理的な理由はたいてい存在しません。ただそうなっており、英語話者はそれをユニットとして学びます。

TOEFL では、prepositions は 2 つの問題を引き起こします。第 1 に、verb-preposition のペアは暗記しなければなりません — 導く規則はありません。第 2 に、時間と場所の前置詞（in, on, at, by, until, for, since）は、実例外を伴うソフトなルールに従い、そのソフトなルールは時間に追われると崩れます。

この記事では、TOEFL Writing と Speaking で最も価値の高い前置詞ペアと、よく出る時間・場所のトラップをまとめます。

TOEFL iBT 2026 でなぜ重要か

Prepositions は高頻度の誤りカテゴリーです。前置詞に苦戦する受験者は、1 つの Writing タスクで小さなミスを 6〜7 個作ります。それぞれは軽微。全部合わせると、採点者には「言語使用が不揃い」と映ります。

Speaking では、前置詞は非常に耳につきます。"I'm interested at this topic" は、英語話者にはどんな耳にも違和感があります。"I'm interested in this topic" は自然に聞こえます。置き換えは小さいですが、印象は大きい。

Writing、特にフォーマルな Writing では、前置詞は明快さに影響します。"The success depends from training" は文法的に誤り。仮に意味を推測できても、その誤りは読み手を一瞬止めます。複数の前置詞ミスがある解答は、読むのが疲れる文章になります。

Reading では、前置詞がときに、トラップ選択肢が突いてくる意味を運びます。"The policy was supported by the committee"（行為者）と "The policy was supported until the committee changed"（時間の区切り） — 大きく異なる 2 つの文です。

トラップ

前置詞のトラップは 3 つあります。

1. Verb-preposition のペア。 暗記しなければならない固定の組み合わせです。TOEFL Writing で最も価値の高いペア：

• depend on, rely on, count on, base X on Y
• focus on, concentrate on, work on
• agree with（人）, agree on（プランやトピック）, agree to（提案）
• different from（米国アカデミック標準）, similar to
• interested in, involved in, succeed in, participate in
• aware of, afraid of, capable of, consist of
• responsible for, suitable for, famous for

2. 時間の前置詞（in, on, at, by, until, for, since）。 ソフトなルール：

• In + 月、年、季節、世紀、長い期間。In March. In 2026. In the past.
• On + 特定の日付。On Monday. On May 26.
• At + 時計の時刻、特定の点。At 3 p.m. At noon. At the moment.
• By + 締切（このポイント以前に完了）。Finish by Friday.
• Until + 終止点（このポイントまで継続）。Work until Friday.
• For + 期間。For three years.
• Since + 起点。Since 2020.

3. 場所の前置詞（in, on, at, between, among）。 ソフトなルール：

• In + 囲まれた空間または広い領域。In the room. In the city.
• On + 表面または線。On the table. On the road.
• At + 特定の地点や住所。At the entrance. At 25 Main Street.
• Between + 2 つの別個の主体、または複数だがペア／個別単位として扱われるとき。Between you and me. The contract between three companies.
• Among + 3 つ以上、グループとして扱われるとき。Popular among students.

よく現れる場面

Academic Discussion 解答。 意見の文は前置詞ペアで満ちています。"I agree with the professor's view. The success depends on consistent practice. I'm focused on the long-term benefits." これらのペアのいずれかが誤っていれば、解答はラフに読まれます。

Write an Email。 フォーマルなメールは正確であるべき固定表現の中で前置詞を使います。"I am writing to inquire about the program."（"for the program" でも "of the program" でもなく。）"Thank you for your prompt response."（"by your response" ではなく。）より広いレジスターの問題については TOEFL 2026 でメールを正しく書く方法とは？ を参照してください。

Take an Interview。 短い面接回答では "interested in," "good at," "different from," "similar to" を頻繁に使います。与えられた時間内で答えるプレッシャーの中で、前置詞はすべります。"I'm good in math"（誤 — "good at math" であるべき）。

Listen to a Conversation。 学生のあるポリシーへの反応を要約します。"The student agrees with the policy"（ポリシーそのものに？ それを作った人に？）。前置詞の選択がどちらかを明確にします。

Write for an Academic Discussion。 報告動詞とアカデミックなディスカッション表現はすべて正しい前置詞を必要とします。"The author argues against the position." "The lecture provides evidence for the opposing view." "The findings differ from previous research." これらこそ採点者が期待する種類の文 — そして前置詞ミスが現れる場所です。

速攻の対処法

前置詞管理の実用的アプローチ：

• 実際に使う 20 個の verb-preposition ペアの個人リストを作る。 教科書の 200 個リストを暗記しようとしない。TOEFL Writing 解答で使う 20 個を選んでドリル。例：depend on, focus on, agree with, similar to, different from, interested in, aware of, responsible for。
• 時間は「ズーム」トリックで錨を下ろす。 長い区間 → in（in 2026, in March）。特定の日 → on（on Monday）。時計の点 → at（at 3 p.m.）。場所も同じ：国・市 → in、表面 → on、特定の点 → at。
• 締切では "by" と "until" を区別。 By = それ以前に完了。Until = その時点まで継続。Finish by Friday と Work until Friday。
• "since" と "for" は時制を確認。 どちらも present perfect を引き寄せる：I've lived here since 2020 / for five years.
• 絶対に "on the past" と書かない。 存在しません。"In the past" が固定表現です。

迷う verb-preposition ペアがあれば、最も安全な救済は書き直しです。"I'm responsible for handling the project" というリスクを取る代わりに "I handle the project" と書けます。クリーンで、安全で、前置詞の判断を完全に避けられます。

提出前にチェックすること

• 使った verb-preposition ペアを走査。他言語のパターンから「翻訳された」ように見えるものはありませんか？ 再確認を。
• フォーマル Writing で "different than" や "different of" ではなく "different from" を使いましたか？
• 締切では "by"（それ以前に完了）ですか？ ある時点まで継続する行為では "until" ですか？
• "on the past" を書いていませんか？ "in the past" に置き換えてください。
• グループでは、3 つ以上に "among"、2 つ（またはグループ内の別個のペア）に "between" を使いましたか？

最後にもう一つ。英語の前置詞は、ほとんどが恣意的です。なぜ depend on で consist of で participate in なのか、満足のいく論理的な理由はありません。修正策は分析ではなく、露出と反復です。リストを作り、リストをドリルし、Writing 見直しの最後 30 秒でリストを確認する。それが、TOEFL Writing セクション全体で、提出前の時間の使い方として最も収量の高い方法です。
