簡単に見える TOEIC 前置詞の落とし穴

TOEIC Part 5 を順調に進めているとします。1問20秒、楽勝です。そして、こんな問題に当たります:

"Please submit your report _____ Friday."

A) by B) until C) at D) on

少し止まります。どれもアリのような気がする? 「until」がそれっぽいから選んで先へ進む — そして、本来落とすべきでない1点を静かに失います。TOEIC の前置詞の落とし穴は、問題が難しいからではなく、簡単そうに見えて注意深く読まなくなることにあります。

出題者がビジネス文脈で繰り返し使うパターンを見ていきましょう。事前に見抜けるようになります。

シンプルなルール

日本語では「金曜までに」も「金曜まで」も同じ「まで」で表すため、by と until の違いが特に間違えやすいポイントです。同じく「3時に」「8月に」も同じ助詞ですが、英語では at 3 p.m. / in August と前置詞を使い分けます。

会議とスケジュール

• The conference call is at 3 p.m. （特定の時間。）
• Our next review is on the 12th. （特定の日付。）
• Annual targets are reviewed in Q4. （より大きな期間の内側。）
• The meeting starts at 9:30 sharp. （時計の時間は常に "at" を取る。）
• The training session is scheduled for next Tuesday. （"For" + 予定されたイベント。）

メールと書類のフレーズ

• Please see the figures in the attached spreadsheet. （ファイルの中。）
• That item is on the agenda for tomorrow. （表面上に列挙されている。）
• I'll respond at your earliest convenience. （固定フレーズ、常に "at"。）

• Please check in at the front desk. （具体的な地点。）
• The all-hands is in the main conference room. （囲まれた空間。）
• HR is on the third floor. （階数には "on"。）

請求書と支払い

• Please remit payment within 14 days of receipt.
• Make the cheque payable to Greenfield Solutions Ltd.
• The amount will be charged to your corporate account.
• A late fee applies after 30 days.

よくある間違い

• ❌ "Please reply until Friday." → ✅ "Please reply by Friday." · "Until" はその時点まで継続的という意味。"by" はその期限の前という意味で、ビジネス文脈ではほぼ常にこちらが必要です。
• ❌ "The meeting is in 3 p.m." → ✅ "The meeting is at 3 p.m." · 時計の具体的な時間は常に "at" を取り、"in" は使いません。
• ❌ "Make the cheque payable for the supplier." → ✅ "Make the cheque payable to the supplier." · "Payable to" は固定のビジネスフレーズです。
• ❌ "The report is in the agenda." → ✅ "The report is on the agenda." · 議題は表面上のリストとして扱われるので "on" を取ります。
• ❌ "Please respond on your earliest convenience." → ✅ "Please respond at your earliest convenience." · 固定のビジネスフレーズで、存在するのは "at" のバージョンだけです。
• ❌ "Our office is in the third floor." → ✅ "Our office is on the third floor." · 英語では階数は常に "on" を取ります。オフィス自体は建物の 中 にあるにもかかわらず、です。
• ❌ "Payment is due in 30 days from now." → ✅ "Payment is due within 30 days." · "Within" は時間枠を正しく示します。"in 30 days" だと正確に30日目という意味になります。

試験の落とし穴

TOEIC の前置詞の落とし穴には三つの層があります。まず: 選択肢はすべて一般的でもっともらしい前置詞で、勘で消去することができません。次に: 文脈は短く、通常一文だけなので、周囲のテキストからあまりヒントが得られません。最後に: テストは固定のビジネスフレーズ（"payable to"、"at your earliest convenience"、"on the agenda"、"within 30 days"）を再利用するので、まとまりとして知っているしかありません。対策は何千もの練習問題を解いて運任せにすることではなく、"good at" や "afraid of" を覚えるのと同じように、フレーズパターンをひとまとまりで覚えることです。重要な警告: 実際の TOEIC 問題そのものを覚えようとしては いけません。規則違反であるだけでなく、実際の問題は廃止され差し替えられます。引き継がれるのはパターンです。パターンを学び、特定の文を覚えてはいけません。

解答

1. by - 提出期限は常に "by" を取り、その時間 より遅れない という意味です。
2. on - ビジネス英語の階数は常に "on" を取り、"in" は使いません。
3. within - "Within 30 days" は枠を示します。"in 30 days" だと正確に30日目という意味になり、請求書の意図とは異なります。
4. to - "Payable to" は固定のビジネスフレーズで、他の前置詞は使えません。
5. at / on - 時計の時間は "at"、曜日は "on" — 一文に二つの前置詞は TOEIC の典型です。
