"Put" のいくつもの顔：Off, Up With, Down, Out

"Put" は世界一シンプルな動詞に聞こえます。カップをテーブルに置けば（put a cup on a table）、それでおしまい。ところが、会議を "put off" した、うるさい隣人に "put up with" している、火を "put out" した、なんて言われると、このシンプルな動詞が驚くほどドラマチックな一家を見せはじめます。"put" のすべての顔に会いに行きましょう。

put の根っこは「何かをどこかに置く」ことです。どの句動詞版も「置く」のバリエーション ── 時間の中に置く、圧力の下に置く、低い位置に置く、目に見えない場所に置く、です。Put off ＝それを時間的に後ろへ置く（延期する）。Put down ＝低い位置に置く（または批判する）。Put out ＝外に置く、または消す。Put up with ＝自分にのしかかってくるものに耐える。「置く」を頭に入れておけば、ファミリーは整理された状態を保てます。

Put down

• 苦痛なく、あるいは力ずくで終わらせる。 "The old farm dog had to be put down."（また："Troops were sent to put down the rebellion."）

Put on

着る、または加える。"Put on a coat; it's freezing." "She put on a brave face." 上演する・制作する、という意味にもなります。"The school put on a play."

Put out

2 つの重要な意味があります。

• 消す。 "Firefighters put out the blaze within an hour."
• 誰かに迷惑をかける。 "I hope I'm not putting you out by staying the night."

Put away

何かを元の場所に戻す、または驚くほどの量を平らげる。"Put away your toys before dinner." "He can really put away a pizza."

Put through

電話をつなぐ、または誰かにつらい過程を経験させる。"Let me put you through to the manager." "They put her through a tough interview."

Put up

よくある間違い

• "We put off to next week the meeting." → "We put off the meeting until next week." · 新しい時刻には "until" を使い、目的語は動詞の近くに置きましょう。
• "I can't put up this noise." → "I can't put up with this noise." · 何かに耐えるには、"put up with" まで揃える必要があります。
• "Firefighters put off the fire." → "Firefighters put out the fire." · 消火には "off" ではなく "out" を使います。
• "He put down of the box." → "He put down the box." · 余分な "of" は不要。down がすでに目的語へつながっています。
