アメリカのレストランでの食事は、通常決まった流れに沿って進みます。ホストが迎え、サーバーが自己紹介し、注文し、食事をし、会計が届き、支払う。各ステップで使われる英語は、カジュアルなダイナーでも、より格式のあるレストランでも、ほぼ同じです。流れを認識できれば、次に何を言うかではなく料理と一緒にいる相手に集中できます。

このガイドでは、入口から出口までの会話を、初心者が戸惑いがちな短い表現 — "How are you guys doing today?", "Still working on that?", "Is this on one check?" — とその快適な受け答えを含めて通します。レストランの慣習（チップの目安を含む）は地域とレストランの種類で異なるため、例はベースラインとして使い、行く店に合わせて調整してください。

想定される流れ

着席式のレストランに入ると、通常、入口近くでホストまたはホステスが迎えます。グループの人数、予約の有無、希望の席を尋ねます。混んでいるときは、待ち時間を伝えたり、名前と電話番号を取って席が空いたらテキストを送ったりします。

席に着くと、サーバーが数分以内に来て自己紹介し、水道水（tap water）を自動で出すことが多いです。アメリカではほぼどこでも無料です。サーバーは本日のおすすめを伝え、飲み物を聞き、メニューを見る時間を数分くれます。準備ができたら注文を取り、調理の好み（ステーキの焼き加減、サラダドレッシング、サイドメニュー）を尋ねることもあります。料理は段階で運ばれます。前菜、メインコース、時にデザートの順です。

サーバーは食事中に数回様子を見に来て — "How is everything?" や "Can I get you anything else?" — 食べ終わった皿を下げます。退店の準備ができたら、会計を頼みます。着席式のレストランでは、レジではなくテーブルで支払うのが普通です。サーバーが請求書を folder（バインダー）に入れて持ってくるので、カードか現金を入れ、サーバーがカードを処理してサインする紙と一緒に戻ってきます。チップを書き加え、テーブルに置いて退店します。

ちょっとしたコツ

• "I'll have..." と "Could I get..." は、どちらも注文に丁寧で自然です。"Give me..." は学習者が思うより乱暴に響きます。
• サーバーは食事中に何度か様子を見に来ます。短い "We're great, thanks" で十分です。詳しい答えは要りません。
• "water" と言うと、多くのサーバーが無料の水道水を出します。瓶入りの水は明示して頼む必要があり、追加料金がかかります。
• "Still working on that?" は、皿を下げてよいか確認する型通りの言い回しで、食べる速度へのコメントではありません。"Yes, still working" でも "You can take it, thanks" でも構いません。
• フルサービスの着席式レストランでは、チップは現実的な期待です。サービスに問題があったらゼロにするのではなくチップを減らし、必要ならマネージャーに伝えるとよいでしょう。
• 割り勘は普通のことです。サーバーが請求書を持ってくる前に伝えると進行がスムーズです。
• 残り物を持ち帰るのは完全に標準的です。"Could I get a to-go box?" が一般的な言い回しです。
• 何かが間違っていたら — 違う料理、調理が遅い、見慣れない請求 — 落ち着いて具体的に頼めば大抵すぐに解決します。
