「Keep」は変わり続ける：Up, On, Off, Away

「Keep」は手放すことを拒む動詞です。保ち、続け、保存し、引き留め、守り、ときには生真面目な警備員のように出入り口をふさぎます。粒子（particle）を加えると、さらに忙しくなります。クラスに keep up し、keep on talking し、keep off the grass し、トラブルから keep away する。動詞の安定した芯は変わりませんが、何が維持されるのか — 速さか、行動か、距離か、隔たりか — は、それぞれの粒子が決めます。

keep on＝し続ける

continue に近いものの、より会話的です。

ふつう -ing 形の動詞が続きます。keep on trying、keep on talking、keep on moving。感心しているようにも、いらだっているようにも聞こえます。

行動が、止まると思われた地点を越えて続くのです。

keep on＝道なりに進み続ける

頻度は下がりますが、役に立つ意味です。

ここでの on は、道の上にとどまり続けることを意味します。

Keep Off

keep off＝表面や区域に乗らない

看板でおなじみの意味です。"Keep off the grass."

文字どおり物理的な意味になりえます。踏まない、座らない、登らない、体重をかけない。

会話では、keep off が「その話をしない」という意味になりえます。

"avoid" ほど万能ではありませんが、適切な文脈では自然な言い方です。

Keep Away

keep away＝距離を取る

こちらは距離の話で、安全のためであることが多いです。

危険なものや場所を述べるときは from を使います。"keep away from the fire."

keep away＝近づかせない

主語の側が距離を作ることもあります。

keep＋目的語＋away という形が定番です。代名詞も間に入ります。"keep them away."

keep away と keep off の違い

この二つはよく似て感じられます。違いはたいてい「表面」か「距離」かです。

  • "Keep off the grass." ＝芝生を踏まないで。
  • "Keep away from the grass." ＝芝生に近づかないで。

問題が「触れる・乗る」ことなら off が自然な粒子です。問題が「近くにいる」ことなら away のほうが合います。

  • "I can't keep up all the emails." → "I can't keep up with all the emails." · 次々来るものに追いつくには、ふつう with が必要です。
  • "He kept to talk." → "He kept on talking" または "He kept talking." · keep on のあとは -ing 形です。
