「Down」は下げて、記録して、減らして、壊す

Down はとても忙しい particle です。「低くする」という考えが多くの方向へ広がるからです。sit down, turn down the heat, write down a number, cut down on coffee, calm down, shut down a computer、break down in tears のように使えます。同じ particle が、体、音量、速度、感情、数字、さらには自信まで下げます。

家族は大きく見えますが、多くの意味は一つのイメージから育ちます。何かがより低く、小さく、静かに、弱く、固定され、または完全に止まるのです。

Down は記録を表す

代名詞は真ん中に置きます：write it down。"write down it" ではありません。

Down は落ち着くことを表す

感情は高く、大きく、荒れているように感じられます。Down はそれを低くします。

Calm down には注意が必要です。文法的には便利ですが、社会的には危ういことがあります。怒っている相手に "Calm down" と言うと、相手の感情自体が問題だと言っているように聞こえる場合があります。柔らかい言い方のほうがうまくいくことが多いです。

phrasal verb 自体が失礼なのではありません。場面が大切です。

Down は拒否や批判を表す

Turn down は断る意味になります。

• She turned down the offer.
• They turned down our request.
• He asked for a raise, but his manager turned him down.

申し出が比喩的に下げられる、または遠ざけられる感覚です。対象があると分離できます。

• They turned down the proposal.
• They turned the proposal down.
• They turned it down.

Put down は侮辱する、相手を小さく感じさせる意味にもなります。

• Don't put yourself down.
• He is always putting down other people's ideas.

ここで down は感情的な下降です。自信や地位が下へ押されます。

よくある間違い

• "Write down it." より自然："Write it down." 分離できる句では代名詞は真ん中です。
• "I need to cut down coffee." より自然："I need to cut down on coffee." 習慣の形は普通 on を取ります。
• 分析したという意味で "The meeting broke down the costs" と言う。より自然："We broke down the costs in the meeting." 情報を分けるのは普通、人です。
• "She turned down the music" と "She turned down the job" はどちらも正しいですが、意味が違います。対象を確認しましょう。
• "The site closed down for ten minutes." より自然："The site went down for ten minutes." Close down は普通、事業や運営が終わる場合に使います。
