Department of Motor Vehicles — 通常は DMV と呼ばれ、州によっては MVD、RMV、DOR など別の名称になることもあります — は、アメリカで多くの人が運転免許、ID カード、車両登録を扱う行政機関です。新規居住者にとっては、日常生活の中で最も書類仕事が多い場所のひとつに感じられるかもしれません。書類は細かく、列は長くなることもあり、状況の小さな違い（州外からの転入、国際運転免許、最近の住所変更など）によって、どの窓口に行くべきかが変わります。

重要なのは、DMV のルールは州ごとに大きく異なるという点です。運転免許を取得する、登録を移管する、紛失した ID を再発行する — こうした同じ手続きでも、隣り合う 2 つの州で必要書類、要件、手数料が違うことがあります。本ガイドは、必要になりそうな英語と、聞いておく価値のある質問に絞っています。具体的な要件は、行く前に州の DMV ウェブサイトで確認してください。

想定される流れ

典型的な DMV の訪問は、check-in（受付）、service window（窓口）、そして（場合によっては）test or photo（試験または写真撮影） の 3 段階に分かれます。

受付では、職員またはキオスク端末に来訪目的を伝えます。番号札を渡されることもあります。番号が呼ばれるまで待合スペースで待ちます。

窓口では、職員が書類を確認し、質問をして、写真や署名を取り、手続きを進めます。支払いや次のステップのために別の窓口へ案内されることもあります。

written test（筆記試験、別名 "knowledge test"） が必要な場合、通常は事務所内のコンピューターで受験します。vision test（視力検査） は視力表を読む簡単なものです。road test（路上試験、別名 "driving test"） は多くの州で別途予約となり、登録・保険加入済みの車両と、資格を持つ同乗者を連れて行く必要があるのが一般的です。
