英語で小数・分数・比をフリーズせずに言う方法
あるビジネス会議で、学習者が 3.14 という数字を声に出して読もうとして "three point fourteen" と言いました。室内に一瞬の沈黙が走ります。同僚がやんわりと訂正しました。"three point one four." 小さなことではありますが、講義や電話、TOEFL のリスニングセクションでは、数字の読み方を取り違えると、その文の意味全体を取りこぼしてしまうこともあります。
なぜ重要か
小数、分数、比は、紙の上で見るのと声に出すのとでまったく印象が変わります。ネイティブスピーカーはそうした数字を文の中ほどにフルスピードで滑り込ませてきます。"The recipe calls for two thirds of a cup, and the ratio is about three to one." 書かれた数字しか見たことがない学習者は、そこで話を見失いがちです。パターンさえ押さえれば仕組み自体はシンプルで、料理、天気、金融、スポーツのスコア、学術的な話—あらゆる場面に登場します。
パターン
小数はポイントのあとを 1 桁ずつ読みます。 0.5 は "zero point five" あるいは単に "point five"。3.14 は "three point one four" であり、"three point fourteen" ではありません。小数点のあとは 1 桁ずつ読み上げます。記号は point という単語で置き換えます。
分数は分母（下の数）に序数を使い、上の数が 1 より大きければ -s を付けます。よって 1/3 は "one third" または "a third"、2/3 は "two thirds" です。half 系は不規則で、1/2 は "a half" または "one half" となります。
比は 2 つの数のあいだに to を入れます。 2:1 は "two to one"。あるものが全体に対する割合を表すときには、英語ではよく in を使います。1 in 5 は "one in five"（5 つに 1 つ）の意味です。

よくある場面
いっしょに料理。 "Add a third of a cup of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt. If you want it sweeter, go up to two thirds." ここでは a third、two thirds となっており、one third や two third ではない点に注目してください。
天気予報。 "There's a 30 percent chance of rain, with about 0.4 inches expected by evening." 話し手はこれを "zero point four inches" または "point four inches" と読むはずです。
カフェで会計を割る。 "Let's split this three ways — that's about twelve dollars each." 割り勘の場面では、英語は分数の代わりに N ways という表現をよく使います。
学術講義。 "Roughly one in seven adults reports difficulty sleeping, and the ratio of women to men in the sample is about three to two." one in seven も three to two もテンポよく流れてきます。in や to といった小さな語を聞き逃すと、関係性そのものを取りこぼします。
オンラインショッピング。 "The screen is 6.1 inches, and the battery lasts 1.5 days." 読み上げると "six point one inches"、そして "one and a half days"（テクノロジー文脈では "one point five days" もあり）。
スポーツ実況。 "It's two to one at halftime, and the shot accuracy is up to fifty-five percent." スコアは to で読み、パーセンテージはまた独自のルールに従います。
よくあるまちがい
- 小数のポイントのあとをまとめて数字として読んでしまう（"three point fourteen"）。1 桁ずつが正解です。
- 分数の複数形 -s を付け忘れる（"two third" と言ってしまう。正しくは "two thirds"）。
- of が省かれる固定表現で of を付けてしまう。half an hour、half a day、half the class など。
- カジュアルな場面で one half と言う。a half の方が自然に響きます（"a half-hour break"）。
- one in five（割合）、one out of five（こちらも正しく、ややフォーマル）、one of five（5 つのうちのどれか特定の 1 つを指す）を混同する。
- 3:1 を to なしで "three one" と読んでしまう。
- 速い英語の中で point という小さな語を聞き逃す—自分でもはっきり発音する練習をしましょう。

小数は point のあとを 1 桁ずつ読みます。分数は上の数が 1 より大きいときに -s を取り、half と a half は不規則ながらよく出てくる定番です。比は to を使い、割合にはよく in が用いられます。point、to、in、a half といった小さな語が自動的に出てくるまで声に出して練習すれば、速い英語の中で数字に不意打ちされることはなくなります。
