Bigger, Better, Best: 本当に納得できる比較のルール

椅子を二つ試します。一つは soft。もう一つは softer。それから三つ目の椅子を見つけます。脚の生えた雲のようです。それは the softest です。おめでとうございます。教科書を開かずに、すでに比較の文法を使いました。

comparatives と superlatives はどこにでもあります。レストランを選ぶとき、値段を説明するとき、テストの点を比べるとき、映画をレビューするとき、天気に文句を言うとき、そして二杯目のコーヒーが必要な業務判断だった理由を説明するときに使います。

ルールは最初、細かく見えます。big, bigger, biggest なのに、interesting, more interesting, most interesting。そこへ英語は good, better, best を投げ込んで部屋を出ていきます。よい知らせは、この仕組みが見た目よりずっと予測しやすいことです。

まず答え

二つのものを比べるときは comparative を使います。

• This bag is lighter than that one.
• Today is warmer than yesterday.
• The second option is more expensive.

一つのものをグループ全体と比べるときは superlative を使います。

• This is the lightest bag.
• Today is the warmest day of the week.
• That is the most expensive option.

基本パターン:

• 短い adjective: adjective + -er / -est
• 長い adjective: more / most + adjective
• 不規則 adjective: 特別な形

• fast, faster, fastest
• careful, more careful, most careful

パターン

比較の文法は二つの質問に答えます。

1. 二つを比べているのか、グループの中から一つを選んでいるのか。
2. adjective は短いか、長いか、不規則か。

1音節の adjectives

ほとんどの1音節 adjective は -er と -est を取ります。

• small, smaller, smallest
• tall, taller, tallest
• cheap, cheaper, cheapest
• fast, faster, fastest

比較対象を名前で出すとき、comparative の後に than を使います。

• This route is faster than the old one.

superlative の前には the を使います。

• This is the fastest route.

スペル変化

短い adjective の中にはスペルが変わるものがあります。

adjective が e で終わるなら、-r または -st を足します。

• nice, nicer, nicest
• large, larger, largest

consonant + vowel + consonant で終わるなら、最後の consonant を重ねます。

• big, bigger, biggest
• hot, hotter, hottest
• thin, thinner, thinnest

consonant + y で終わるなら、y を i に変えます。

• dry, drier, driest

2音節の adjectives

2音節 adjective は混合地域です。多くは more と most を使います。

• careful, more careful, most careful
• useful, more useful, most useful
• modern, more modern, most modern

-y で終わるものの中には -er と -est を取るものがあります。

• happy, happier, happiest
• busy, busier, busiest
• easy, easier, easiest

スタイルによってどちらも使えるものもあります。

迷ったら、長めの adjective には more が安全なことが多いですが、大事な語なら実際のよくある使い方を確認しましょう。

重要なのは adjective のリズムとけんかしないことです。とても短い語は -er を楽に運べます。faster、colder、brighter。長い語にさらに文字を付けると重くなります。More comfortable はなめらかです。comfortabler は説明書なしで組み立てられた椅子のように聞こえます。英語はよく、言いやすい形を選びます。

3音節以上

長い adjective は通常 more と most を使います。

長い adjective に -er を足さないようにします。

よく使う語の中には特別な形を持つものがあります。

これらは常に出てくるので覚える価値があります。

二つを比べる

• This laptop is lighter than my old one.

• The morning train is less crowded than the evening train.

comparatives はよく than を使いますが、いつも必要ではありません。

• This version is better.
• The line is moving faster.

もう一方のものは文脈で理解されます。

グループで比べる

• This is the cheapest ticket available.
• She gave the clearest answer in the meeting.
• That was the most useful part of the lecture.
• It is one of the most common mistakes.

superlatives には通常グループが必要です。たとえそのグループが暗黙であってもです。

• This is the best.

聞き手は「今話している選択肢の中で best」と理解します。

同じ程度と、同じでない程度

二つが同じ程度だと言うには as + adjective + as を使います。

• This room is as bright as the other one.
• The second task is as difficult as the first.

あるものがその性質をより少なく持つと言うには not as + adjective + as を使います。

• This route is not as fast as the highway.
• The sequel was not as funny as the original.

この構造は、どこでも less を押し込むより自然なことがよくあります。

比較を小さな強さの語で調整することもできます。

• much faster

• not nearly as difficult as

これらの語は、極端に聞こえすぎるのを避ける助けになります。This is better は便利です。This is slightly better はより正確です。This is far better は差が大きいことを伝えます。比較の文法は勝者だけの話ではありません。差の大きさも表します。

Less と least

性質の量が少ないことには less と least を使います。

• This option is less expensive.
• That was the least helpful comment.
• The smaller room is less noisy.

数えられる nouns には less ではなく fewer を使います。

• fewer people
• fewer mistakes
• fewer emails

数えられない nouns には less を使います。

• less water
• less noise
• less information

くだけた会話では、特に標識や素早い会話で、数えられる nouns に less を聞くことがあります。丁寧な文章やテストでは、一つずつ数えられるものには fewer のほうが安全です。

動作を比べる

adverbs にも比較形があります。

• She speaks more clearly now.
• He drives more carefully in heavy rain.
• The new system runs faster than the old one.

-ly で終わるものなど、多くの adverbs は more を使います。

• more slowly
• more politely
• more efficiently

短い adverbs は -er を取ることがあります。

• faster
• harder
• earlier

hard と hardly が違うことも忘れないでください。He works harder は、より努力して働くという意味です。He hardly works は、ほとんど働かないという意味です。小さな語尾一つで文が完全に変わります。

落とし穴 1: 二重比較

more と -er を一緒に使いません。

most と -est も一緒に使いません。

落とし穴 2: than を忘れる

二つ目のものを名前で出すなら than を使います。

落とし穴 3: superlatives の前の the を忘れる

落とし穴 4: gooder を使う

英語は gooder をくれません。気持ちはわかりますが、使う形はこれです。

落とし穴 5: 比較するグループが不明

"This is the most useful" だけだと、聞き手は「何と比べて useful なのか」と思うかもしれません。必要ならグループを足します。
