「Back」は戻り、延ばし、支え、返事する

Back は後ろを指すので簡単に見えます。しかし phrasal verbs では、後方を示すだけではありません。物を返す、決定を取り消す、期限を延ばす、主張を支える、メッセージに返事する、困難の後に回復する。Back は戻り、抵抗、支えの particle です。

この三つの力が見えると、give back, take back, push back, hold back, back up, call back, bounce back はばらばらではなくつながって見えます。

すぐわかる答え

Back の中心は「以前の場所、人、状態、位置へ向かう動き」です。phrasal verbs ではよく次を表します。

• 戻る、返す：go back, come back, give back, put back, take back
• 返事する：call back, write back, get back to
• 遅らせる、抵抗する：push back, hold back, fight back
• 支える、確認する：back up
• 回復する：bounce back, come back
• 後ろへ動く：back up, step back

こつは「何へ back するのか」と問うことです。場所か、人か、過去の時点か、安全な距離か、より強い立場か。

Back は戻ることを表す

これが最も字面に近い家族です。

• We went back to the hotel after dinner.
• She came back from lunch at two.
• Please give back my pen.
• Put the book back on the shelf.
• I need to take back the jacket; it doesn't fit.

Go back と come back の違いは話し手の視点によります。話し手の現在地から離れる動きなら go back が合うことが多いです。話し手、または共有された拠点へ向かうなら come back が合うことが多いです。

• "I have to go back to the office." = 今そこにいない。
• "Please come back soon." = 私のいる場所、または共有する状況へ戻る。

Give back は持ち主へ返すこと。Put back は元の場所へ戻すこと。Take back は店に返品する意味にも、言葉を撤回する意味にもなります。

• I take back what I said.
• He apologized and took back the accusation.

言葉が公の場から口の中へ戻るようなものです。完全になかったことにはできませんが、撤回はできます。

Back は返事を表す

コミュニケーションが出ていくと、返事が戻ってきます。

• I'll call back in ten minutes.
• She never wrote back.
• Can you get back to me by Friday?
• He texted back right away.

Get back to は仕事でも日常でもとても便利です。たいてい何かを確認した後で、後ほど返事するという意味です。

• I don't know the answer, but I'll get back to you.
• Could you get back to me with the final price?

分けてはいけません。

• 正しい："I'll get back to you."
• この意味では不可："I'll get you back."

"Get you back" は復讐、または人をある場所へ戻すことを意味し、返事ではありません。

Back は延期を表す

Push back は何かを後の時間へ動かすことです。日付をカレンダー上で後ろへ押すイメージです。

• They pushed back the meeting to Thursday.
• The launch was pushed back by two weeks.
• Can we push back the deadline?

スケジュールでよく使われます。中止ではありません。延期です。

注意点があります。議論では push back が抵抗する、反対するという意味にもなります。

• Several employees pushed back against the new rule.
• I expect some pushback from the finance team.

一語の pushback は抵抗や反対を表す名詞です。日付を動かしているのか、考えに抵抗しているのかは文脈で決まります。

Back は抑える、抵抗することを表す

Hold back は何かが前へ進むのを止めることです。物理的、感情的、実務的に使えます。

• The police held back the crowd.
• She tried to hold back tears.
• Lack of sleep is holding back his progress.
• Don't hold back during the discussion; say what you think.

対象は群衆、涙、情報、才能、進歩などです。手が何かを止めて前へ行かせないイメージです。

Fight back は攻撃や圧力を受けた後で抵抗することです。

• The team fought back after falling behind.
• She fought back against unfair criticism.

Push back は普通、言葉や組織上の抵抗です。Fight back はより強く、より能動的に聞こえます。

Back は支えることを表す

動詞 back は支えるという意味になり、back up はその支えをより強く、見えやすくします。

• The data backs up her claim.
• Can you back me up in the meeting?
• The witness backed up his story.
• Always back up important files.

よくある意味は二つです。

1. 支える、確認する
2. 安全のためにコピーを作る

どちらも背後に何かがあることに関係します。後ろにいる人があなたを支える。主ファイルの後ろにある保存コピーが守ってくれる。

Back up は後ろへ動く意味にもなります。

• Please back up a little; you're too close.
• The truck backed up slowly.

同じ句で三つの世界：支える、コピーする、後退する。対象と文脈が決めます。

Back は回復を表す

Bounce back は問題の後に回復することです。

• She bounced back quickly after the injury.
• Sales bounced back in May.
• The team lost badly on Friday but came back strong on Sunday.

Come back も回復や成功への復帰を表せます。

• That singer is trying to come back after years away.
• We were down by ten points, but we came back and won.

一語の comeback は名詞です。

• The second half was an amazing comeback.

Bounce back は、回復が速くエネルギッシュに感じられるとき特によく合います。

Back は距離を表す

ときどき back は単に空間を作ります。

• Please stand back from the doors.
• Let's step back and look at the whole problem.
• The camera pulled back to show the full room.

Step back は思考や計画でよく使われます。細部を見るのをいったんやめて、大きな状況を見ることです。

• We need to step back and ask what the customer actually needs.

足を動かす必要はありません。心が後ろへ下がり、広い視野を得るのです。

よくある間違い

• 返事のつもりで "I'll get you back tomorrow" と言う。より自然："I'll get back to you tomorrow." To がないと復讐の意味になりえます。
• 延期のつもりで "The meeting was pulled back to Friday" と言う。より自然："The meeting was pushed back to Friday." Push back は後に動かします。
• "Please return me my pen." より自然："Please give back my pen" または "Please give my pen back."
• "The data backs her claim" も可能ですが、多くの日常場面ではやや不自然です。より自然："The data backs up her claim."
• 返事のつもりで "He held back to answer" と言う。より自然："He wrote back" または "called back."
