around・about・nearly・over・under：英語で数字をあいまいに表す方法
ある会議で学習者がこう言いました。"We have nearly thirty applicants, maybe thirty-two." 同僚がやんわりと訂正します。"If it's thirty-two, that's over thirty, not nearly thirty." nearly は下を指す語—まだ達していない数を指します。over は上を指します。たった一語の違いで、意味は反対になってしまうのです。
なぜ重要か
実際の会話では、たいてい正確な数字は必要ありません。私たちは見積もります。"About 20 people came."、"Nearly midnight."、"Just over a mile."。適切な概数の語を選ぶことで、わずかに上か、わずかに下か、それともそのあたりか—聞き手に方向が伝わります。間違えれば、果たせない約束をしてしまったり、誤った方向のデータを報告してしまったりすることもあります。幸い、概数を表す語のセットは小さく、それぞれにはっきりした方向性があります。
パターン
about と around は数字の 近く を意味し、上か下かを強く示しません。"About 30 people" は 28 人かもしれませんし 32 人かもしれません。日常会話で最もよく使われる表現です。
roughly と approximately は同じ意味ですが、よりフォーマルあるいは書き言葉的に響きます。"Roughly half the audience" はレポートで使え、"about half" は会話で使われます。
nearly と almost は 近いがまだ達していない を意味します。数字の 下 を指します。"Nearly 8 o'clock" は通常 7:55 ごろを意味し、8:05 ではありません。
over と more than は数字の 上 を意味します。"Over 100 people came" は少なくとも 101 人を意味します。
under と less than は数字の 下 を意味します。
just over と just under は ぎりぎりで というニュアンスを加えます。"Just over a mile" は 1 mile よりほんの少しだけ多い距離を意味します。
give or take はカジュアルな表現で、プラスマイナス を意味します。"Fifty people, give or take" はおよそ 45～55 人を意味します。
-ish は数字や時刻に付くカジュアルな接尾辞です。"30-ish" は 30 くらい、"7-ish" は 7 時くらい、を意味します。

よくある場面
人混みの規模を見積もる。 "There were about 200 people at the concert — maybe a few more, maybe a few less." 実際に数えてみたら 230 人だったなら、"over 200" または "a little over 200" に切り替えます。
時刻を伝える。 "It's nearly 6" は通常 5:50 から 5:58 ごろを意味します。"It's just after 6" は 6:01 から、せいぜい 6:10 まで。"6-ish" は 5:45 から 6:15 までのどこでも当てはまる、とてもカジュアルな表現です。
お店で値段を言う。 "The phone costs just under $500." これは $480 から $499 のあいだを意味します。もし $501 だったら "just over $500" と言います。
移動時間。 "The flight is roughly five hours." about よりもややフォーマル。"Around five hours" も話し言葉では同じくらい自然です。
出席率を報告する。 "More than 60 percent of the staff voted in favor." 上司が知りたいのは方向性（above）であって、単に近さではありません。
料理の見積もり。 "Add about a cup of flour. Give or take a little, depending on the dough." 料理の会話では 2 つの概数表現を重ねて使うこともよくあります。
カジュアルな待ち合わせ。 "Let's meet at the café 7-ish, sound good?" -ish は親しみがあって柔軟な響きで、ネイティブスピーカーの多くがよく使います。
グラフを読む。 "Sales rose by just over 10 percent in Q1, then dropped nearly 5 percent in Q2." just over はわずかに上回ったことを示し、nearly はあと少しで届かなかったことを示します。
よくあるまちがい
- 目標値より上の数字に nearly を使う。nearly は常に下を指します。
- 重複する概数表現を組み合わせる。roughly about、approximately around など—どちらか 1 つを選びます。
- almost や nearly が「まだ達していない」を意味することを忘れる—まだ届いていない値を表現する語です。
- over than や under than と言ってしまう。over と under は単独で使うか、more than と less than を使います。
- about と exactly を組み合わせ可能なものとして扱う—相容れません。
- フォーマルな文章で -ish を多用する。チャットやカジュアルな会話には最適ですが、エッセイでは違和感があります。
- just over（わずかに上）と just under（わずかに下）を混同する。これらは類義語ではなく、反対の意味です。
- 固定表現 give or take の代わりに give and take と言ってしまう。

まとめ
一般的な近さには about と around、同じ意味でフォーマルなら roughly と approximately、まだ達していない なら nearly と almost、上を表すなら over と more than、下を表すなら under と less than、そして ぎりぎりで 上か下かを表すなら just over / just under を使います。方向が大切です。nearly は下を指し、over は上を指します。適切な語を選べば、数字が正確でなくても、自然に伝わるようになります。
