Counter एक सेवा-सतह है जहाँ कर्मचारी ग्राहकों की मदद करते हैं। किसी दुकान में deli counter, pharmacy counter, returns counter या customer service counter हो सकता है।

सामान की जगह पूछना
मदद माँगते समय सामान का नाम बताएँ और उसका section या aisle पूछें।

"Which aisle has canned soup?" (Canned soup किस aisle में है?)

अगर आपको सामान का नाम न पता हो, तो उसका इस्तेमाल, उसकी पैकिंग, या पास की श्रेणी बताएँ। "I am looking for a spray cleaner for glass" कहना "I need that cleaning thing" से ज़्यादा काम का है।
Shelf की स्थिति बताना
Shelf की स्थिति अक्सर ऊर्ध्वाधर (ऊपर-नीचे) और क्षैतिज (दाएँ-बाएँ) होती है। top, middle, bottom, left, right, front और back का इस्तेमाल करें।

सीखने वालों की आम ग़लतियाँ
Aisle और isle में गड़बड़ न करें। Aisle किसी दुकान, हवाई जहाज़, थिएटर या चर्च में एक रास्ता है। Isle का मतलब द्वीप होता है और ख़रीदारी के लिए आपको यह शब्द नहीं चाहिए।
"On aisle five" मत कहें। Aisle के अंदर की जगह के लिए "in aisle five" कहें। सतह के लिए "on the shelf" कहें।
हर सेवा वाली जगह को checkout मत कहिए। Deli counter, pharmacy counter और returns counter सेवा-इलाक़े हैं। Checkout वह जगह है जहाँ आप पैसे चुकाते हैं।
"The product is at the shelf" मत कहें। कहें "on the shelf."
आम दुकान-बातचीत में पीछे के कमरे के लिए storehouse का इस्तेमाल मत कीजिए। कहें stockroom या "in the back."
