Inglés para estancia hospitalaria: ingreso, planta, pre y postoperatorio, instrucciones de alta

"You're being admitted". Una vez que un médico dice esto, los días siguientes se parecen en hospitales de todo el mundo: controles de presión cada pocas horas, preguntas repetidas sobre tu nivel de dolor, enfermeras pidiéndote que respires hondo o que camines por el pasillo, y una mañana, una hoja impresa con instrucciones de alta. Cada etapa tiene un inglés predecible. Este artículo divide la estancia en cinco fases: ingreso, planta, preoperatorio, postoperatorio y alta.

Vocabulario esencial

Ingreso

  1. "I was told I'm being admitted." — Me han dicho que pasaré la noche aquí.

  3. "Could someone help me bring my bag up?" — ¿Alguien puede ayudarme con la maleta?

Vida en planta

  2. "My pain is getting worse, not better." — El dolor empeora, no mejora.
  3. "I feel nauseous—could I get something for it?" — Tengo náuseas, dame algo para eso.

Alta

  1. "Could you walk me through the discharge instructions?" — Por favor, explícame la hoja del alta.
  2. "What signs should I watch for at home?" — Señales de aviso en casa.
  3. "When should I come back for a follow-up?" — Cuándo volver para el seguimiento.

Expresiones torpes frente a naturales

Poco natural / poco claro Natural Por qué
I sleep here tonight? Am I being admitted overnight? "Admit overnight" es la frase estándar para ingreso.
Doctor cut me when? What time is my surgery scheduled for? Usa "surgery" y "scheduled"; suena profesional.
I no eat from when? What time should I stop eating? "Stop eating" es natural para la regla del ayuno.
Pain medicine please give. My pain is at a 7—is it time for the next dose? Combinar la gravedad con la petición acelera la respuesta.
I want go home. When am I being discharged? "Discharged" es el verbo para "salir del hospital".
Tell me what do at home. Could you walk me through the discharge instructions? "Walk me through" es la frase de petición estándar en contextos médicos.

Diálogo de ejemplo: revisión del alta

Nurse: Good morning. Dr. Patel cleared you for discharge today. Could we go over the discharge instructions together?

You: Yes, please walk me through them.

Nurse: First, your medications. Take this antibiotic twice a day for seven days, with food. Take this pain medication only as needed, up to four times a day. Don't drink alcohol while you're on either.

You: Got it. What about the wound?

Nurse: Keep it dry for the first 48 hours. After that, you can shower, but pat it dry. Watch for redness, swelling, or pus, and a fever above 38.5°C.

You: What signs mean I need to come back to the ER?

Nurse: Severe pain that doesn't respond to medication, heavy bleeding, fever above 38.5, or shortness of breath. Otherwise, schedule a follow-up with Dr. Patel in two weeks.

You: Could I get this in writing, including the medication schedule?

Nurse: Of course. Here's your printed discharge summary. Call us anytime if you have questions.
